DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi,

Still a bit flummoxed by First Edition number runs: 1-10 is easy, but could someone pleased explain the following - is it a first?

13579108642

Thank you.

yep its still a first edition/first impression. Different publishers just do their number lines in different ways. As long as the lowest number is a 1 its ok.

Chris, just imagine your 13579108642 as a lump of solid type. For each subsequent print run, the printer chips off one of the outside numbers, making 3579108642 then 357910864, and so on, until you are left with the 10, for the 10th printing.

When you get into Harry Potter territory, I guess the printers don't mind making up new blocks.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Thanks, Manor House - that is very helpful.

I'm glad you are about because I thought of you today :):

For 35 years I have lived twenty minutes away from Wightwick Manor and today was my first visit. Isn't that shameful?

I fancy the interior would have been a little ornate for William Morris' taste; and I found the varying styles a little off-putting. However, the house and gardens were beautiful.

I'm sure I looked at it from a much different perspective than yourself - my only knowledge of William Morris and Pre-Raphaelites are from 19C Studies.

I remember you were disappointed.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I enjoyed Wightwick, but, as you say, the ornate interiors and the mish-mash of styles, I found a little disappointing. I must admit that the half-timbering on the exterior walls fooled me. The bits that looked the oldest were, in fact, 19th Century additions.

I know I keep banging on about it, but Blackwell, near Windermere, is a real Arts and Crafts gem.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Good day, all,

I have some Folio Society books to list. From perusing the 'completed items' I have some idea as to price, but really have no idea as to the scarcity or otherwise of Folio Society generally.

Is there a website anyone could recommend where I could brush up on this?

Thank you.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

The Book & Magazine Collector have done two features on them. One in issue 84, the other in issue 167.

The first FS books were issued in 1947.

B&MC 84 covers the first 100 titles from 1947 - 57.

B&MC 167 covers collectable later issues from 1957 onwards.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I did hear somewhere that Folio Society collectors are the most fastidious folk ever about condition.

I'm sure that is true, Husky.

If I were a collector, I would be very tempted by them.

Will have to read up on them.

You're right about condition. If they don't look absolutely perfect and unopened, then it's a hard sell. Even the slipcases have to be presentable.

I came by 3 boxes of them (around 60 volumes) about 6 months or so ago. I put all the perfect ones on ebay. No research, just started them off at £6.75 with a BIN of £12. Just over half of them sold for good prices. I've still got the rest. I'll try them again sometime. If I had a shop, I think they'd be a good shop item.

Having heard horror stories about FS collectors, I was very worried about the feedback, but all was fine.

I think to list them as a shop item, you would need to be a litte more au fait with prices than I am. Will probably start them around £4.99 and hope for the best.

Oh, by the way, I only have four, not a boxful 😄

Steve, have ordered one of those mags. Hope it helps a little.

Just don't take any notice of the prices. They are all for first editions, all London high street prices, and all out of date now anyway.

Folio Society is actually the poorer cousin of the US Limited Editions Club.
