Chris, just imagine your 13579108642 as a lump of solid type. For each subsequent print run, the printer chips off one of the outside numbers, making 3579108642 then 357910864, and so on, until you are left with the 10, for the 10th printing.
When you get into Harry Potter territory, I guess the printers don't mind making up new blocks.
