Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

It is an association copy, of sorts. But if parts have been torn out it probably wouldn't be of any great interest to a collector. The main thing with books is that they be complete, intact and in the best condition possible.

A book about a Pre-Raphaelite painter with no illustrations is a strange item indeed.

There are avid entusiasts of Burne-Jones who could well be interested in this item, though.

Thanks - looking again there are some of the illustrations still there - it was only meant, I think, to have line drawings - there is evidence that someone has torn a few of them out. (surely this is forgivable if it's the author that did it - sort of directors cut???) Anyway do I stick it on ebay with a reserve and see what happens - or have I got to be more adventurous in my selling technique. Remembering that I (Rupert-wise) have no history of selling this kind of item....

I don't like reserves, so I'm not the best person to ask about them. You can use some nice keywords for this item, so I would tend to open the bidding on the low side.

hi I,m wondering whether anybody can help me with some information on the best books on the wildlife of northern france specifically normandy region any help would be appreciated thanks John.

John, I've had a bit of search, without much success. Even my Michelin Tourist Guide for Normandy makes no reference to the wildlife of the region. The wildlife is similar to that of Southern England but there's a lot more of it: - there's a lot more unspoilt countryside!

Wherever I have travelled in France the local information brochures have contained photos and info. of birds and animals, so it may be worth contacting the regional tourist boards.

This link is to a tour company website offering a tour in Normandy to observe wildlife. If you read through the description it gives an idea of the sort of wildlife which can be seen.

If you really want a book, I would recommend any guide to the wildlife of Britain and Europe. My birdie-book covers those, and North Africa!

The Lonely Planet Guide books or website might be a good place to start - the ones I've got ( not France) have a section on the environment and short section on wildlife and their website may have suggested reading or links.... ______________________________________________________________________________

thanks everybody, that,s given me a few leads to be going on with. The reason I am after information on the wildlife of this area of France is I am moving over there next year to run a carp fishery which is in a very secluded spot and it would interesting to see what else I
can spot apart from large carp.

I am struggling with a category for this book - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M Pirsig. I haven't read it so help would be appreciated.

Hi patgal, If I was listing it, I'd put it first under Buddhism (Zen) as a modern classic, which it is. Then if it didn't sell there, relist it in a motorcycle category as a manual, or even under "spare parts" with an enticing description, and hope to introduce a biker to a new take on biking!

The paperback does okay, too. Sold a couple of copies.

How does one describe this - I have a little book dated 1898, Through the Looking Glass, and while on the shabby side it is still quite delightful with 50 illustrations by John Tenniel. The pages are all tight and square but there is 'lift or separation' between pages 64-65 and 144-145.
When the book opens out flat I can see a line of backing or webbing? So, how to describe?

I've a vague recollection that someone called this an open gutter.

"Cracked" usually refers to the hinges.
