DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello Steve,

Well,it does have blue boards with engraved frontis. But here again the number of pages doesn't tally. Mine doesn't have 555, it has 575 - no publisher's list. The original booksellers were J.Rushton and Son, Wolverhampton.

I know you love a challenge.;-)

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

There are a few on the list of 575pp. Nelson, like all the others back then, tended to have a lot of variant bindings. Could be one of those.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Never judge a book by its cover ...

At the risk of arousing rival interest (among lurkers), I'm wondering whether to bid on this ...

... but the description of the interior is sparse. What questions should I ask re. 'tight bindings' etc.? Remember, I usually buy run-of-the-mill, popular paper backs.

I'm just finishing re-reading 'Girl of the Limberlost' and realise that it, sort of, follows on from 'Freckles', which I've never read.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Looks like one of those soft suede or leather bindings where the page block is heavy enough to crease the lower edge. I think they would usually be issued in a slipcase.

If all you want is a reading copy just make sure the text is intact. I once gave a couple of hundred 'vintage' SF paperbacks to a young lad trying to start up a shop. He proceeded to chuck out any with creases on the covers. Couldn't understand when I told him the useful bit was nothing to do with the cover, and that he might never see copies of those titles again as they were all out of print. I didn't give him any more.

If you fancy this as a collectable, well, maybe not. I do think it should have a slipcase, but I could be wrong.

Just ask if the binding is tight, any pages loose, foxing, staining, etc.?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello everyone
I have a book -The Harvest Moon by Justus Miles Forman ,1913 1st edition in very good condition. Can only find two listed on Addall for around $600-$700 !! Both have dustjackets but mine doesn't .Before I list it can anyone say what difference the lack of a jacket is likely to make for a book like this .The book itself has a three coloured picture -inset into the front board and has b/w plates by Maurice Greiffenhagen

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I'd have to guess that the absence of a 1913 dust wrapper wouldn't be too unusual.

That would make the dust wrapper particularly rare.

I recall a dealer advertising, in the 1990s, for copies of The Hobbit 1st edition. He was willing to pay £1,500 for one in its dust wrapper, but only £300 without it. Those numbers are much higher now, but the descrepancy remains.

Another example would be 'The Man with Two Left Feet' by P.G. Wodehouse. It was at number 93 in B&MC's 100 most valuable books of the 20th century. They reckon £4,000 in dust wrapper, perhaps £400 without. But then, in their article they had to show a picture of the 1933 U.S. edition because the dust wrapper on the U.K. first edition is so incredibly rare they couldn't find one to photograph. Yet number 4 on that same list is Fitzgerald's 'Great Gatsby' in dust wrapper at £50,000. They found one of those to photograph.

Hmmmmm.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I see what your saying -I guess it'll come down to someone wanting the book (as always ); when I saw the prices my expectations started running away .In this case the book is attractive in its own right .I just need to decide how low to start .
Thanks.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

You are more than welcome to offer your goods.

Whether they sell or not is another matter.

Sadly there has been so much misdealing and criminality shown from that part of the world, among others, that many buyers shy away from such purchases.

In the UK market there could only possibly be around 60 million prospective customers as that is the entire population.

China has over a billion people - isn't that a large enough market? Far bigger than the UK market. Far bigger than the European market. Bigger, even, than the U.S. market.

But here is a question for you...

China is a communist nation. eBay is a capitalist marketplace. Why do the Chinese authorities allow their communist citizens to take part in such a capitalist organisation?

I would have thought they were direct opposites.
