Hi All,
A ticket has opened with tech to investigate and all accounts who report the issue will be added to the ticket. Once there is an update from them we will update the threads.
Thank you,
Kat

According to a post on the UK community boards, the latest version of the eBay app requires Android 10 or later, or iOS 17 or later.
If you cannot upgrade your operating system or find an older version of the app that works with your current operating system, you should still be able to use a browser to go to ebay.co.uk instead.
If eBay browser links are opening in the Android version of the app automatically, you can disable that by going to your device Settings: Apps: eBay: Open by default: Opens supported links and choosing "Don't open in the app". iOS users can tap and hold an eBay browser link and choose "Don't open in the app".

Hi All,
Tech have confirmed the latest report of the app not working is not a technical issue. Sometimes, to ensure that you are using the latest version of eBay, we require you to update your app version. Please uninstall and reinstall your app, and then log back into eBay as normal. That should rectify the situation. If this does not work, you may need to upgrade your OS version and then reinstall the eBay app. In the meantime, you can also access ebay.co.uk via your desktop or mobile web browser.
Thank you
Kat

So as it's not actually a technical issue that ebay can fix, the fact that the latest update won't work with older phones and operating systems (which seems to be the problem), is not something that concerns ebay, it's just an 'unfortunate consequence' of the update?

In fairness to ebay - going on other threads it appears that the latest app version needs Android 10 as an operating system.
Android 9 is still used by around 5% of Android users according to Wikipedia - but it last received a security update 3 years ago. Even Android 11 is no longer supported.
Apps requiring the latest operating systems is not uncommon and certainly not an issue exclusive to ebay. I've got an old iPad that certainly won't run the latest versions of Netflix, Spotify, BBC iPlayer etc.
There's a lot of people gunning for ebay at the moment - but updating an app to exclude unsupported operating systems (that may leave users exposed to security defects) seems a reasonable move on their part.
The one thing they probably should have done is at least communicate that the app wouldn't run on older devices in advance.

Sony Xperia XQ-DQ54, Android 14, - not to old phone not to old Android (the latest current version is 15 new phones supplied with), however a same issue. On attempt to update eBay app Google Play says "This app won't work on your device". Not a eBay tech problem?
However advice from eBay tech team to update to the latest Android is not feasible, due not all latest system updates brings improvements but typically bring more glitches and problems to your device. So, that is not a solution if to measure system update pros and cons.
So, if eBay not bothered with the tech problem, I choose to opt-out of their app and going to use web browser.

Not a tech problem from eBay side?
After uninstalling eBay app the same message persist. So, no chance to install it again.

Make sure you have the latest version of Google Play Services and Google Play Store:

Older versions may not allow you to get the newest eBay app version.

Thank you.
However, Google Play and Google Play Services updates are allowed to happen automatically. They are up to date. Clearing cache and user data on both on them gives absolutely nothing, same as uninstalling and reinstalling Play Services. The message on Google Play about eBay app persist: "This app won't work on your device".

If the app won't work on your device, use a browser to go to ebay.co.uk instead.

Exactly what I forced to do. 😉

I am on Android 11. Google play will not let me use Ebay app. Says I need Android 10 or later... Since when is 11 less than 10? Have Ebay or Google reinvented numbers?

I ended up downloading the .apk for EBay app version 6.207.1.1 from apkpure and installing it. It seems to be working just fine on my phone (Blackview BV8800Pro) which runs DokeOS 3.0 - based on Android 11. To do this you need to allow your phone to install apps from unknown locations, so be careful and check any files for viruses before installing! This would suggest that the problem people are having may be more to do with Google Play rather than the app (and therefore EBay) itself. Hope this helps.
