Another well-tested code release...

Ok I know it's Friday and Friday is "Let's release the code without testing so we can go home early" day but I've just spotted this absolute doozy at the foot of every search page.

This is what happens when you (?accidentally) set the column width to one or two characters and don't check before hitting 'Submit' ...

Well done, eBay programmers.

Another well-tested code release...

Any difference if you hold down the shift key and refresh the page? Or if you try a different browser?

I tried your search in Firefox and the page seems to be displaying correctly for me, including the "Recently viewed" row.

eBay may very well have botched some formatting, but there may be ways to get around the issue. Some values of text zoom may display better than others, for instance. Or a change may be conflicting with your current cache or cookies, and the problem may self-correct when cache is overwritten or cookies are updated.

Another well-tested code release...

Thank you for your suggestions @eburtonlab  but - with all due respect - I am already conversant with all the possible workarounds: refreshing, clearing cookies, trying a different browser and so on (I should, incidentally, have mentioned I was using Win10/Chrome).

The point is, though, that users of this site should not have to clear cookies, try a different browser etc on a regular basis just to try and find an unbotched version of the site. Be honest - how many other sites do you visit where you regularly have to do any of the above because no-one bothered to check before releasing code?

The level of coding on this site is ridiculously amateurish. The example I posted is just one of many but it made me laugh out loud when I saw it. I honestly could not believe something so ridiculous was cleared for live release. Yes there are workarounds but - seriously - why should site users have to work around coders' incompetence?

Have you established that other users are having the same problem?

If the problem is on your end, waiting for eBay to fix it is not a good strategy.

The same search results are formatted correctly for me using Chrome on a Windows 10 machine.

There are, at the time of writing, 330 users logged on to the Community boards. These days that figure only occasionally struggles into (very) low four figures The chances of someone experiencing the same issue as the one about which I posted, coming on to the Community Boards, finding my post and replying are, at best, slim. So No, I have not established whether other users are having the same problem - but then again why should I? It may be difficult to believe but eBay is not top of my list of conversation topics...

Frankly it should not be up to any single user to put out a call for contact from other users experiencing the same issue. The bottom line is that if the code was tested and formatting was given even a cursory glance the type of kindergarten-level programming which caused the issue I originally mentioned would not have been released. But this is eBay and the infinite monkey theorem applies.

I can assure you that I have enough experience (is 35 years enough?) to know that a) the problem is not on my end - I knew anyway but double-checked before I posted - and b) I will not be waiting for eBay to fix it. I'll be able to tell when it's fixed because they'll mess something else up in doing so.

The format of search results reverted to its previous (correct) version sometime late Friday/early Saturday. Whether this was the result of code being rolled back or overwritten I know not and, frankly, care even less. It's pretty evident eBay don't care, otherwise even the most basic of errors wouldn't make it through testing,  so why should I?

The standard of programming on this site is an complete farce. I've seen some tosh over the years but the one- or two-character column wide was an absolute howler and the screenshot was worth sharing for a laugh.

That's just about all eBay is good for these days.

I had this yesterday.     Did not have a clue what it was and put it down to another Ebay glitch so just signed out 🙂

@1956glyn  Many thanks for posting that. It's not just me then...

I must say I do find it interesting that although I first noticed the issue on Friday morning (which then reset to the previous - correct - format later the same day without me clearing either cache or cookies, trying another browser or standing on one leg whistling Dixie) you experienced the issue yesterday.

The logical (and fairly obvious) conclusion is that there are different versions of the code on different servers and what you get is pretty much pot-luck. That doesn't surprise me in the slightest as I have previously, on several occasions, shown that to be the case with other areas of the live site.

I assume you are currently seeing the correct format on search pages and long may it continue, but don't be surprised if you see the incorrect format again in future. The code is still out there - somewhere.
