If you get a non-paying buyer in future, open an Unpaid Item case instead, and close as 'unpaid' after 4 full days to get the selling fee credited back to your Ebay account. The buyer will get a deserved Unpaid Item strike on their account, and will be blocked from leaving feedback. You also have the option of adding the non-payer's Ebay ID to your Blocked Bidders List so s/he can't mess you around again.

The only time I would advise you to cancel a transaction is if the item is for collection. Opening a UI case is not recommended as the buyer will pay by PayPal if they do pay, and PayPal is unsafe for collection items. You would have no Proof of Posting receipt in the event of an Unauthorised Account Use claim, which is the only thing PayPal and any payment processor will accept for such a claim. Signed invoices etc are not accepted as these are too easily forged.

Unless you do an unpaid case the buyer can leave whatever feedback they want.

how did you process the cancellation?

if you chose the wrong reason you will still be charged

if you haven't done so, you need to use the drop down menu next to the item and cancel the transaction, choosing buyer requested as the reason
