simple delivery

I think that everyone who has a problem with this enforced simple delivery should phone ebay and complain to them in person, the more complaints they recieve the more they are likely to do away with this ridiculous concept

'I rely on ebay published policy on seller protection when SD is used.'

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am not convinced that seller protection using S.D. will be available for a suprisingly large amount of items.

Yes, I'm nagging on about the 'exclusion list' again!

S.D. will indeed cover loss and damage to items that conform to the S.D. terms and to the carrier's terms.

The carrier's terms include the ridiculously long 'excluded from compensation list'.

We have had a definitive answer from Kat@ebay that items on the exclusion lists are excluded from Simple Delivery. (and obviously it's benefits)

But excluding those items at the 'making a listing' end of the process can't happen; it'd be way too complicated  (I made a trial listing of something that would definitely be on the exclusion list. Not only was it not excluded , it was recommended  to go S.D.....)

So this means the only place where the exclusion of that item would become apparent, is at the point where compensation might be needed.

i.e. when the porch-pirates have been round. (Or it's been run over by a fork-lift in the depot..)

I 'spose we will really find out when a seller appears on these boards wondering why ebay *won't* compensate for something sent S.D.............. ebay's answer will be ; Tough. You didn't read the 'small print'.

The hypothetical £600 jewellery item being discussed here, would certainly not be covered 'under the carrier's terms', and therefore under S.D.

I think the problem is that most people are living in a bubble until something goes wrong, it's only after that they realise the 'feel good- we have your back!' wall of text that says they are protected is a facade hiding the reality of the actual protection they will get behind it.

Their approach will never be 'how can we make it right for the seller', it will be 'what information can we use to avoid paying them?'.

If we have jewellery sellers on here- Simple Delivery will not cover them it seems : Valuables, such as jewellery, watches, and precious metals, including, but not limited to, jewels, watches, gems, precious metals, real pearls, silver, gold

I've had experience with this before where insurance compensation comes into play, they are completely within their right to say you should have researched our policy before listing and understood to use eBay for this was at your own risk as you did not read our restricted/prohibited list on our Simple Delivery page. I have to send alot of antiques from Japan to the UK for my work and it's very clear there's no compensation if something goes wrong, just because they allow you to do something doesn't mean they'll support you when you run into issues.

That parcel I had issue with the Simple Delivery other day (eBay setting it as large letter out of nowhere) was a gold watch pendant, fortunately the buyer stated that it arrived and given feedback. I think it's the last of my precious metals (was getting rid of all gold I have after I was mugged last year) so am fortunate that I don't have to worry about it as much now, those on here who were enjoying these types of sales before will likely have to switch to a business account if they are anxious about sending it.

After writing all of this, I'm wondering if this is just one huge push to get people running small operations to switch to a business account?  Certainly seems like the only way you can be protected for some items now is to declare yourself as a business.

I fully understand and accept that some like SD and some don't. However the attitude of a lot of those that are against it is similar to some of the supporters that you moan about, I have seen numerous posts claiming that all or most private sellers are against it despite the "petition" post garnering less than 250 responses.

As for whether there should be a choice - every private seller has one as Ebay is not an essential service and no-one if forced to sell here.

Logically, it's terrible for buyers now- they can't have combined postage on anything. I had a feeling they were putting low priority to this last year when I was trying to buy multiple items by accepting offers but they had made it incompatible with invoice requests as they took the money up front, it was upto the seller to refund that amount at the time but were under no obligation to.

At the end of the day, sellers will lose out to this and buyers will likely hold back as they may as well pay full price at a retail store if they have to pay for 6 shipping costs. Simple Delivery seems more like an option for small insignificant items (which is what I'm guessing those praising SD are selling), there are things that require Special Delivery & Parcel Force.

eBay can do what they like, of course- it's not our business but people will drift away. You say it's not an essential service but I can tell you right now for me it has been essential, last year I was attacked and selling my items on eBay absolutely prevented me from going in the red with my payments. I had money from my main job but having to take sickness a lot due to my wounds it was not enough to deal with various things I had committed to before I went into my downward spiral, I would be absolutely panicked if I was in that position right now and lumped with dozens of oversized items that I needed to sell to stay afloat.

There isn't really any decent alternative to eBay where you are guaranteed to clear out your listings in a month so I would argue at a time when people are struggling for various reasons, it can be an essential tool to keep them afloat. It's true that there are other places to sell but most are geared towards you being a business seller, FB Marketplace & others I hardly had any traction at all with identical listings.

I feel it's rather arrogant for people in comfortable positions to be telling others what is essential, there are plenty of things in life that people deem as non-essential but to someone else may be absolutely essential.

This may sound like it's more of a moral debate but my horror is mainly directed at the incompetence of the rollout being incomplete at launch, whenever I work out solutions in business I run through absolutely every scenario to ensure there's minimal feedback from the customer. On the moral side of it we all have different lives, I was doing considerably well the year before and had zero need of eBay but one little event in life made it essential for me the next year.

In summary, even though I pushed my sob story in here I'll admit that sellers shouldn't be acting entitled expecting eBay to bow down to them but eBay should understand when they don't become essential to those that found purpose in it- they'll lose a great deal of their worth. Whoever planned this rollout should hang their head in shame- the lack of collection is another example to be disappointed in, they've said 'they are working on it' but this should have been worked out as an integrated feature before they made Simple Delivery mandatory. It's a sign that someone incompetent has rolled this out and had not thought out the required 20 steps ahead of them.

I just feel fortunate that I sold a bulk of my stuff last year as now it would be hard with the restrictions, no one should be forced to used Evri as an alternative to DHL or ParcelForce. I won't even risk buying from a seller who offers Evri as their primary courier.

If you get another rejection at the PO show them this:

https://www.postoffice.co.uk/mail/guides/how-to-sell-on-ebay

"If you have a personal eBay account, you’ll most likely be using Simple Delivery. This means the buyer pays for the postage and you’ll be sent a prepaid postage label. You can print this yourself or ask the Post Office team to print it from a QR code. Our branches should accept all parcels, as long as they’re within the service’s maximum weight and dimensions (20 kg and 61 cm x 46cm x 46cm)."

As far as the 'petition' is concerned i think that the fact that 250 have signed it is actually pretty good considering that many people do not even use the forum or know about it!  Personally i see no point because e bay will never listen to a petition, they will only react to people actually leaving or constant bombardment of opinions on here and other places.

Of course every seller has a choice to leave e bay but we should not have to, the only ones gaining from SD being mandatory is e bay and they could have negated that by having a sellers fee which people were paying as an accepted part of the selling process.

I wouldn't use the amount of petition responses to gauge the unpopularity of SD.

The sheere amount of other related threads on the subject clearly emphasises it's unpopularity and the cackhanded way it's being implemented along with all the other unnecessary " improvements"..

I vehemently oppose SD being forced on users as the only option but haven't signed the petition because , A - i'm not a petition signing sort of person and B - If ebay are so blind and ignorant to the volumes that have already been said a little petition isn't going to make a difference..

It's rare a petition will do much in reality, it may even be of benefit to eBay as a large number of people are directing their dislike/energy into one place rather than spreading out posts / reviews everywhere else. People are more likely to form a negative opinion when they see 250 posts about SD than 250 replies to a petition.
