I sold an item and now the buyer says they want a refund because they bought the item by mistake.
The item was £170 and buyer paid straight away so im not convinced they bought item by mistake..
any advice on what to do or any experience of this before would be appreciated please.

Cancel the sale -pick the reason 'buyer changed their mind' .
If you don't , you could be opening yourself up to a right can of worms from a disgruntled buyer!
(then block the buyer from buying anything else from you.....)

One simple rule no item no refund.
They need to return the item but as a private member you do not need to accept the return.
But you may get them damaging it and returning it anyway.
Firstly have they opened a case yet.
Without a case it all just bluster.
Then see what reason they use in that case then come back.

Ooop sorry....... Have you posted the item? I'm hoping not?

The crucial pieces of information are:
What stage in the proceedings are you at, I.e have you sent it?
If you have sent it, do you accept returns on the listing?
Has the buyer just messaged you or opened a returns case?

If you've not sent it just refund them with buyer changed their mind.
No point in sending when they will just send it straight back, and probably break it so they have a free excuse to return it.

'They already have the item'
Then do not refund without return.
Ask then to open 'returns case' on ebay.
Yes , you'll end up paying for the return postage (the 'returns label') but you get your item back.
Don't refund before it arrives.
If it arrives broken (or as a different item!) come back here and ask for help again !

"Yes , you'll end up paying for the return postage"
not if it's a change of mind return.

Then my first reply still stands.
