i can't add my own attributes for variations. so when i create my own and type in what i want i can't press enter to move it across

Are your attributes conflicting with item specifics?

For your attributes, use a phrase like

Item Size

Item Colour

Shirt Size

Shirt Colour

You can't use just "Size" or "Colour" because it conflicts with an Item Specific.
