The new buyer protection on auction items

We have all been expecting the new buyer protection policy when they introduced free listings, And while I understand some element of fees on buyers who buy off ebay ,what I want to understand that if I sell an item for £20 the listing will show a price of £21.55  but what happens if I list a item on a auction with a starting price of £20 ie £21.55  but the end price is £50  will the buyer be expected to pay £52.75 ,And what happens about postage cost

if on a auction they add the buyers protection fees  on the starting bid and not the final bid I will be doing a lot more auctions

Re: The new buyer protection on auction items

I often bid on auctions from oversea's sellers. Under the current bid amount Ebay shows + 20% Vat, they do not show what the total price is with the VAT added  until  the item is won in the auction and you go to check out.

I am expecting they will do the same so they will display the current bid and underneath + 4% and 75p. It will be up to the bidder to make a rough calculation of what that will mean to them at the end of bidding or on the amount they want to bid.

I expect there will be less people buying by auctions for a little while until people get used to the new system and the maths. A few final bidders may not check out after either for a while when they see the final amount but if its lower priced items and £1 - £2 difference then most people will pay it if they really want the item.

My tip have a calculator handy before you bid or list an auction item. But you can average it out at £1.15 on a £10 item, £1.55 on a £20 item and £1.95 on a £30 item.

But then there is the postage on top to add, so it is going to be a mess to be honest unless Ebay find a way to add the extra fee's into the current bid amount. Which would be the best thing they could do really but as they don't do it on the oversea's auctions i don't expect they will do it here.

It will take a bit of time for everyone to get used to it but it won't put too many people off in the long run.

Re: The new buyer protection on auction items

thankyou all for your feedback its been confusing ,it seems a case of suck it and see, but I thought buyers already had protection within ebay  so why the  need for this scheme ,Ive never expected something for nothing it remains to be seen weather the buyers protection is included in the final price or added to it ,Ive tried to understand the terms in ebay terms but it can be read either way

Re: The new buyer protection on auction items

1 month on from this discussion. I have just bid on a private sellers auction, and there is no mention of any additional buyer fee at all... so will that be a surprise at the end? I have screen captured each stage just in case i am mistaken

Re: The new buyer protection on auction items

We were not expecting the BPF to be mentioned until checkout.

Your bids will include it.

Re: The new buyer protection on auction items

BPF to be mentioned until checkout.

As there has been minimal communications from ebay to Buyers on this Fee ,  once they get to check out and see it, morally they should be able to just cancel. I would if a buyer on here.

That said , what compensation are sellers to expect from ebay for cancellations - a simple relist isnt much joy , but for auctions it delays the sale for 7 days or what ever was the duration.

ebay is not famous for maintaining a stable glitch free platform, to say the least, what is the Mentors / ebays  thoughts on this very complex change on a 'rickety' platform , and does that make it not fit for purpose and merits compensation to those using it?
