The Shape of Things to Come on Ebay.

On the first page of this board today there are four different threads on the topic of "My payments are being held by ebay".

As ebay earns interest on Held balances, is ebay increasing the frequency of payment holds to earn more ?

New sellers.  Returning sellers.  Bank verification.  Personal details verification.  Provide photo I.D.  Provide NINO.  Non tracked delivery, are all some of the reasons given for Holding funds that I remember, there may be more.

I had my funds held on this ID not too long ago. They were requesting photo ID which I thought was weird as I had already given them a copy of my driving license 2/3 years ago. I still had the scans so just sent them again and the hold was lifted. It could be something they now do periodically or to double check they have the correct information before sending a report to HMRC or they had ‘lost’ the original verification. How ebay is now, it could have been anything.

How about:

ebay requiring proof of purchase, and

other MC011 cases.

I'd say they've eaten the apple in the proverbial Garden of Eden and it tasted so good they want to keep eating.  Perhaps retribution will come eventually.

There are now more valid reasons why eBay must take such actions.

It wasn't eBay's idea to collect NINO's.

"Know Your Customer" legislation wasn't eBay's idea, and they had nothing to do with its implementation.

However, both require eBay to take action to ensure compliance.

I agree it can be annoying if it happens to you as a seller, but, to be honest, for all the interest they will gain, their increased costs in complying with the changing legislation will more than wipe that out.

There will always be isolated individual cases where it appears rather heavy handed, and no doubt it is sometimes, in many of these cases. However, overall, eBay wouldn't be doing this, if they didn't feel that they needed to.
