THE EBAY OF 2025 - WHAT TO EXPECT AS A SMALL PRIVATE SELLER - SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO ?

Just as the title says...

Apparently a few disturbing/concerning changes to eBay coming in January & February 2025...

1) eBay Managed Shipping.

2) Payment Holds until delivery of a sold item has been confirmed.

So I'm a bit confused about number 1 - eBay's managed shipping... Not sure how this is going to work ? and whether it will be something like Packlink (only made compulsory instead of optional) ... or will it be like an "eBay Global Shipping program" type of setup where we send our sold items to eBay's 3rd party distributor and they then forward the item to the buyer by their default postal service ??... something tells me this could be Evri  (Hermes ! )  - Not happy or comfortable with this !  knowing Evri aren't always great !  😞

Moving on to number 2 - payment holds/delays until a sold items has been confirmed delivered (or 14 days have passed since buyer purchased the item and the buyer hasn't opened any cases during that time)... This can now be time consuming to get paid... Like eBay's new managed payments wasn't already slow enough !... now it's getting even slower !... not ideal if you've  got little money in the bank that week and have to 'find money upfront' to pay for posting sold items (this can get pretty expensive if 2 or 3 heavy items which cost £20 to post sell on eBay at the same time to different buyers)... Oh wait a moment... Conveniently eBay now does managed shipping and  they'll let you have an advance on your buyer's payment to cover shipping costs PROVIDING YOU BUY IT AT AN INFLATED RATE FROM EBAY ONLY !... How nice !  😞

Now the debate of whether I should stay ? or go ?

I have always loved buying and selling on eBay for many years... Would it be worth carrying on with these new changes which are very worrying... or would it be better to do what the old saying says and QUIT WHILST YOU'RE AHEAD ???

All comments welcome - The good, the bad and the ugly - Let's know what you all think !

would a small private seller be skinned alive by the new 2025 eBay ? I wonder ! 🤔 🙄 😁

Quick question I live in Portugal but list on ebay.co.uk which is working ok for me because I send everything by UPS courier and I only ship to the UK and continental Europe...had to stop worldwide the costs involved shipping to the USA and Australia were just stupid.  My question is how is the managed payments going to affect me?  Will I still be able to send my parcels via courier or will I have to ship them using the ebay system?

'Evri tracking (vis ebay purchased postage) isn't working/updating again.

So when getting paid relies on this working.... it doesn't bode well!!  '

Ebay will just sit on your money for the full two weeks in that case...... but you'll get it in the end.

Ebay are assuming that, as a private seller/hobby seller you're just selling off your own second hand bits for fun and don't need the money desperately quickly in order to pay suppliers etc or business costs...because you're not a business!

THE EBAY OF 2025 - WHAT TO EXPECT AS A SMALL PRIVATE SELLER - SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO ?

Hi everyone. I also received eBay's e-mail several days ago and became rather alarmed. I'm a private seller registered on ebay.co.uk, but I'm not a UK-based seller (I live and ship from Portugal). Will the new rules for private sellers apply to me as well?

My question may seem small among so many doubts floating around right now, but what I make on eBay is my current livelihood. I cannot afford to wait for being paid, that simply won't do. Perhaps closing my account and opening a new one on one of EU's eBay sites would be a solution for my problem, I really don't know at this moment what to do. 😞

'Simple Delivery' (managed shipping) won't apply to items sold from overseas so you will be able to continue sending your items as you do now.

No idea if the UK rules will hit you in Portugal, but if you're registered in the UK , possibly?

But, ebay are trying to separate private sellers' methods of selling from business  sellers' methods of selling.

If you don't want to put up with being treated as a private seller, you should change your account to that of a Business seller.

Business accounts won't have to put up with the new rules.

And, to be honest, if what you make on ebay is your 'current livelihood', you *are* running a business...... I know ebay have never made it obvious to anybody setting up an account which one they should go for; even giving private sellers the option of having a 'shop'!

To a lot of people, the word 'shop' equates to the word 'business' so I can see why people think they're in the right place....😕

As you are registered as a private seller in the UK - in all likelihood all of the UK site conditions will apply to you regardless of where you are based - this has always been the case and I cannot see any exceptions

I have the same question...plus what is this about private sellers buyers being charge a fee of 75p or 4% of the sale price....this is going to drive even more sellers away from private sellers and on top of that we get less listings....I get this nasty feeling that having been on ebay since 2003  we private sellers are being driven off...how sad ebay used to be a great place to find quirky stuff now its just full of chinese crepe!

In all cases of sellers using or being forced to use simple delivery - the following applies :

At checkout your buyer is charged for the delivery cost and the amount is then paid to eBay for the label. If you decide not to use the prepaid label, you'll need to purchase your own label instead at your own cost.

Simple shipping only applies to domestic postage - so sellers based abroad, registered in the UK and shipping from abroad will NOT BE ABLE TO USE simple shipping - If they hold stock in the UK they will be able to use simple shipping.

For those forced to use simple shipping - simply not using the label will refund the buyer and the seller can then buy their own label at the sellers cost - so the shipping cost for the seller not wanting to use simple shipping labels would have to be included in the selling price !

The only exception would be 'Simple Delivery', if that does become mandatory for private sellers, as it only applies to UK sellers.

Well, we're already in Q1 of 2025 and it hasn't happened.

@beacon_77  as others have pointed out - there's still a lot of Q1 left yet to go.

The original 8-K disclosure from October 1st about eBay's plans to introduced buyer fees gave a timeframe of "early 2025" - and they stuck with that.

ebayukbuyerfee (1).jpg

Then on the Q3 call which I quoted, the CEO laid out further plans including that Simple Delivery would expand from clothing to other categories in October (which it did), then ramp up with a phased rollout switching it to from default opt in to default opt out for eligible private items starting in Q4 (which it did and is still ongoing) before finally becoming mandatory for private sales of eligible items in Q1 2025 (which it hasn't yet, but given the history...odds are very likely they'll stick to that too.)

As I explained in previous posts - those words were not just off the cuff remarks. They were part of the CEO's prepared statement for investors which would have been scripted, vetted, and approved by high level legal, compliance, investor relations and communications stakeholders for the simple fact that those statements carry significant weight with investors and the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

If the CEO of a publicly traded company is found to have knowingly given false information that materially impacts the stock (either positive or negative) that's a recipe for major fines, shareholder lawsuits and all manner of unpleasantness.

Not to mention that eBay is leaning heavily on Simple Delivery to quell investor concerns about loss of revenue from the fee changes - as directly stated in the Q3 earnings presentation

Q3-Q4guide-1 (1).jpg

That along with the CEO's statement that I quoted should put to rest any notion that mandated Simple Delivery is gossip or assumptions - there is no way those statements would have been made the way they were, to the audience they were, in the format they were and giving an explicit timeframe of Q1 if it wasn't already a fully developed plan ready for execution.

Could eBay look at all the uproar here and change their minds about mandated Simple Delivery? Anything is possible of course.

But nobody at eBay wants to have to explain to investors why they didn't go ahead with it when there is so much riding on it to fill the revenue gaps and the CEO already gave very explicit guidance about it that analysts and investors would have already been basing their trading and valuation decisions on.

If you don't want to believe it and will wait to get caught out when it does happen, that's your choice of course, but at least accept that those who are saying it will be mandatory are doing so based on credible public information directly from the mouth of eBay's CEO, not just gossip or rumors.

As for anyone else reading this, my advice remains the same - all private sellers would be wise to familiarize themselves with the FAQ and T&C for Simple Delivery so you are not caught unprepared.

Wow!

Its closing an account not opening and I am sure the account holder would check no funds sales available etc...

Deaths can be sorted on the Gov " tell them once "

If they start wanting further private/personal  info from me I will just leave the account dormant as many others have.

It is all guesswork but if free delivery was allowed I would imagine it would just allow the buyer to choose free delivery or an enhanced chargeable service -  there would be no charge to either buyer or seller for the free service

The tell them once service doesn't cover ebay and if it did the service is supplied with the death certificate  and notification via the service - so extra info will be supplied

Many members try to close accounts when they can see refunds coming or restrictions on the horizon  or have returns opened in the hope of avoiding the consequences - not everyone is honest or in agreement with the mbg - not much of a surprise

ebay also want to make sure no claims come in after an account is closed so sales have to exceed the claim limit - they may even look at potential chargeback timelines for certain at risk accounts ?

If a third party tries to close an account - ebay have to be sure it is the account holder or they have the legal status / legal position to do so for obvious reasons - so ring up and say your great uncle Bulgaria died so close the account may just warrant proof being needed -

If there is no charge to either buyer or seller then that would mean that eBay would be paying for the postage label.  I don't think so!

Thank you for the info...

I didn't think of  those possibly avoiding  xyz...to get away with " whatever?"

So is it best to close account after 30 day period of last sale?

@sml192  Actually, that's exactly how it works.

With Simple Delivery, eBay decides which shipping methods are shown to the buyer and at what cost. The shipping amount is paid to eBay, eBay purchases the label and sends it pre-paid to the seller, and eBay keeps whatever difference there may be between what the buyer paid and their negotiated rates with the carrier.

The current terms for Simple Delivery show that eBay can, in their sole discretion, decide to offer discounted or free shipping to the buyer.

2024-12-09_12-23-44 (1).jpg

In those cases it would be a promotional discount offered by eBay at their expense at no charge to either the buyer or seller.

We keep overlooking 2 words here "eligible listings".

So considering "those words were not just off the cuff remarks. Those words would of been "all listings" for private sellers, unless some listings weren't going to be part of this plan.

The choice of word "eligible" still gives ebay massive room to manuever. Just a thought! Clothing is a yes though. I still haven't seen simple delivery as an option. I may list my old denim jacket later to see what it looks like. Very eager for the 4th to see which categories it will appear on.

Yes, eBay can offer free postage to the buyer themselves but the seller can't.  If the seller did offer free postage then the seller would have to pay for the label.
