Scams on eBay?

I haven't sold any clothes on eBay but I have read that it's free to sell them... Are people allowed to sell an item of clothing and include an extra item... as a free gift?

For example: Polo Shirt + free Samsung phone   ??

Secondly... Something else I've recently noticed...

An item that is worth about £40 get listed and starts at 0.99p.

Then about an hour later that item has 5 bids and is up to £150.

The day before the item is due to end, the high bids are retracted and it goes down to £0.99 with the original first bidder in the lead.

Am I right in thinking someone is bidding the item up to way over the asking price so that other potential buyers don't bother viewing or bidding on it - then they withdraw the high bids and go into the last 12 hours with very few others watching that item and get it cheaper.

Not unless they are immensely daft.

You can't give away free gifts on eBay, and the polo shirt would be listed in the clothes department and the seller would not be able to mention that the listing is for both a shirt and a phone. The phone would need to be listed separately in the phones category.

Bids can only be retracted under certain circumstances.

  • The seller significantly changed the description of the item
  • You accidentally bid the wrong amount. For example, you meant to bid £20, not £200. In this case, enter the price you intended to bid as soon as you've retracted the incorrect bid
  • You can't reach the seller.

Any other bids can't be retracted, but you can still contact the seller to see if they'll agree to cancel a bid for you. The seller isn’t obligated to cancel a bid so they may not agree.

Invalid bid retraction shows on a buyers feedback profile and may get them sanctioned.

Re: Scams on eBay?

I think if you offered a mobile phone as a free gift & it proved faulty then as a buyer you would not have a leg to stand on. However I suppose you could return the polo shirt as the wrong size - claim the full price back & keep the phone as "it was a free gift"!

Re: Scams on eBay?

What you are suggesting is call "fee evasion" and would get your listings removed and could get your account shut down

As to your second point, what you described is call bid shielding, and it a team of buyers trying to get the item for the cheapest price possible and yes it is a scam. Only works if nobody else bids though!

Re: Scams on eBay?

Knowing my luck the polo shirt would have a hole in it and I would have to return the shirt and the phone to get a refund  and the seller would deduct 50%  claiming the shirt was not returned in the condition it was sent out !
