SD, who pockets the difference?

Clarification needed please.

If I list the postal cost of an item at, as an example £3.99, and Ebay issue the label, let's assume it's £2.70, who keeps the difference, me or Ebay?

OR.......... Do Ebay set the price of postage to buyer under the SD scheme and I have no say in it?

Thank you.

With Simple Delivery eBay sets the postage price, you don't get a choice.

If the item isn't eligible for Simple Delivery then you can still use custom postage options and set your own price.

These are the current prices for Simple Delivery:

SD, who pockets the difference?

Does anyone have an explanation for why it costs more to despatch items worth £100+?

Initially, I thought it was to compensate for loss or damage on a higher priced item, but that's what the BPF is for - the greater the value of the item, the greater the 4% that eBay rakes in to cover 'protection'.

Nope. The BPF has nothing to do with postal loss or damage protection.

(The BPF appears to be no more than a money making exercise, in that it gives no more 'protection' that that which already exists)

Loss and damage in the post will be covered by ebay under the 'Simple Delivery' rules...... provided your sale and item conforms to ebay's terms and the carriers' terms.

If your sale item does not conform to those terms, you, the seller, will be responsible for loss and damage.

(This 'exclusion list' problem rumbles on..... a couple of days ago ebay staff assured sellers there would be a solution to this problem with S.D. exempt categories that matched the 'excluded from compensation' categories that delivery services all have. This turned out to be another pile of untrue pants. Once again thank you for the info on this! @edwardian-dreams )

You're right, @lucy_farmer .  Had I read the Help text, I would have discovered this for myself.

So, the 4% buys the ability to call CS 24/7.  I suppose this is useful to buyers that work shifts and those that awake at 3am and realise that their parcel hasn't arrived.

Not sure why sellers not being paid until after delivery is a benefit worth paying for.  The buyer's card is charged at the point of sale, not at the point of delivery.

Similarly, the encryption of payments and the trusted payments partners.  This has been the standard for years.

I envisage that the 'excluded from compensation' is going to be the cause of a lot of arguments between sellers and CS.  I suppose eBay will take the SNAD line that they didn't see what you sent, therefore their decision is final.

On 24/7 customer service I agree, though I feel it’s in there to lend something more tangible to the fee

On the payment hold it’s exactly what Vinted do (though there’s is 2 business days from the point the customer confirms delivery) so eBay have just copied the market

on the secure payments - of course it’s been standard for years. BUT that doesn’t mean the systems that keep it secure don’t need to continue o be paid for. Someone has to pay card processing fees and for the systems that keep it secure. EBay aren’t going to dip into their own pockets for that.

24/7 is also a bit of a lie....it's already been admitted to being AI out of office hours.
