Requirement to add NI number to account

I understand why Ebay is now asking for my NI number as HMRC have decided to tax Ebay sellers on their earnings, which seems a little unfair as most of us are recycling used items, not brand new.  Why not just tax the sellers of NEW items?  Also, it says because I have sold 30 items this year (there is no information available regarding when the Ebay year starts? Is it January or April 6th to coincide with the tax year? And if it is the former, how can they work out what tax is due) I have to give them my NI number.  I often sell items at 99p so my profits are not huge.  I just wish to participate in the Circular Economy but now I feel I am being penalised for this!

The year start in January the 1st  for reporting as the rule comes from Europe.

As a piece of advice for you have a look at your account and say to yourself am i registered correctly as no private seller would have 10 plus of anything brand new. Least of all have soled 775 of that item.

eBay will report to HMRC when you have 30 sales or sell €2000 approx £1700

If you are selling your own items you are unlikely to have to pay any tax

The year for reporting is from Jan 1st

Actually you don't understand why ebay is now asking for your NI number. There is a long thread on this issue which will help you.

You also don't seem to understand when you need to have an ebay business account.  It's nothing to do with new or used items.

Private accounts are just for getting rid of unwanted personal possessions.
