AS OF 15TH APRIL MY DAYS AS A PRIVATE EBAY SELLER WILL STOP AFTER 19 YEARS.
I AM FED UP OF THE GREED OF EBAY AND I HOPE OTHER EBAY SELLERS DECIDE TO NO LONGER LET THE EBAY CONTROL FREAKS HAVE THIS MUCH CONTROL OVER PRIVATE SELLERS.

Get off your high horse and face reality rather than spout uneducated nonsense.
If this seller is only selling new items to supplement his income and not his main income stream, then he is a private seller.
If his main income is ONLY selling new items then HE IS A BUSINESS.
BTW there is another possibility if you are disabled and in receipt of benefits there is a clause that allows you to earn a modest income upto a maximum amount per week.
This is called therapeutic earnings and are exempt from tax and do not count against gross benefits.
So now you know !!

'I have talked to HMRC and they know that I manufacture items and sell them on eBay so I If was breaking any the law I am sure that HMRC would have told me ...'
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HMRC know their own area of the law extremely well and are obviously perfectly happy, from *their* point of view, with what you are doing. 😊
But it's not HMRC who have made the rules on who is or isn't a business , especially when it comes to 'distance selling' /online selling. These rules and laws are down to UK Trading Standards.
And they say you should be a business 🙁
Ebay have never been particularly pro-active on telling sellers whether they should be business or private : even to the point of seeming to encourage businesses to trade under the 'private' label.
Offering 'shops' and 'out of stock' options, to sellers who aren't even supposed to 'stock' in the first place??
(I believe this all stems from ebay's parent being American; on the U.S. ebay site there is very little difference between business and private, and ebay UK don't appear to be too bothered to sort it out on this side of the pond either....)

‘Does not accept returns’

How does this guy directly effect you?, is he selling the same items as you?
Or are you just being a sh*t stirring quizling?
I see you've not exactly being actively engaged in sales lately.
25-07-2025 12:11 PM
What have I sold recently? I honestly don’t know.
25-07-2025 12:19 PM
Aha so you admit it, as your not selling at present and can't remember the last thing you sold, also your listings clearly show you haven't sold anything in the last 3 months, so how does anything ebay does currently effect you?
This is a community forum, not place to a grass up your neighbours !
Judging by your past comments on multiple topics.
You are an instant expert, just add subject.

I just sold a toy car the other day though. And a Shrek toy the other week.
By my reckoning nearly 30 items this year. Ready to share my NI number soon!
We’ve got off wrong. Do you come here often?

@kevin*cedar your products are pretty cool and you are clearly skilled. Your images are really good too.
I don’t doubt you are all above board with HMRC.
But as a business seller myself (not this account) it is really frustrating to see how many ‘private’ sellers have been misinformed by eBay themselves.
There are posts by users that think just because they have opened a shop - they are a trading correctly as a business on eBay.
The issue with sellers such as yourself is that you are making items to sell - which makes you a business, therefore you need to start complying with Distance Selling Regulations, ie you accept returns, display contact information etc.
I’m not digging at you personally it’s just this Americanism ‘side-hustle’ has filtered into our language (no thanks to HMRC using it too) without any context or people understanding that there are responsibilities that go with it.
And just to keep this thread on topic, I have complete sympathy with genuine private sellers having to deal with this horrendous situation and ever moving goalposts, never ending glitches and wrong information on Simple Delivery. I tried to list a football programme on this account last weekend, faffing around with work arounds, weights and prices. Gave up after 10 minutes. Ridiculous.
I saw a post last week that a long time user said it’s not easy, enjoyable or functioning at all.

''I saw a post last week that a long time user said it’s not easy, enjoyable or functioning at all.''
This sentence sums up the current, albeit a very long now - experience that I have with eBay selling.
In order to list my stuff, I have to list my items from another browser, as my text disappears on Firefox when I post info about items that I wish to sell. Unfortunately, certain buttons don't even properly work while doing the listings. Drop down menus in my case.
The whole situation is a bit sad, though.

Next to your listing's are 3 dots, click on them, a drop down will appear, one of the choices is "end listing" click on that, you will be asked "are you sure", click on blue banner at bottom "end listing".

Thank you for your compliments about my items that is much appreciated I have been on eBay selling for just over 15 years and it was acceptable to eBay to have a private sellers account from the start that has never been questioned I have been on my pension now for almost 7 years but as I stated earlier I am still quite active at 72yrs of age and still enjoy my woodworking trade. In regards to your comments about a business sellers account bearing that in mind Selling on eBay now is only to supplement my pension for a little extra income That in itself would not warrant a change at my age to a business account on the possibility that new polices would follow in the same manner that has fallen onto private sellers With your comment about the Americanism side -hustle having been filtered into our language does not mean we all have to have a American way of attitude I am proudly British and I love my Yorkshire puddings and dumplings....I'm rambling but I accept that I have gotten a little stubborn in my fast approaching old age I am reluctant to change especially when one organization tries to force me without any respect a policy which now is being forced on private sellers, A number of months ago it was all right for eBay to charge me seller fees on a private sellers account and they took it without any complaint from me, When you really think about it Trump stated a few weeks ago that Countries were lining up to kiss his ass to get a Trade deal Well i live in a country that wants No part of a American way of a policy That's the same as Canadians do not want to be the 51st state We all have our own limits and I have reached mine
25-07-2025 3:02 PM
@kevin*cedar We agree on Trump, dumplings and Yorkshire puddings!
Unfortunately it’s not about your own personal circumstances warranting it. It’s the law.
From the Government website:
You need to set up a business if you ‘trade’ in goods or services.
You’re likely to be trading if you:
All of those processes demand by law that buyers have their rights protected.
Now I’m not picking on you.
There is a local business to me that has 20,000 items listed on eBay and they are registered on here as a private seller. Again I have no doubt they are all above board on the tax front. But blatantly avoiding all eBay fees, and denying consumers their rights.
It is wrong, and I actually blame eBay for this.
I’ll get my coat because I’ve taken the thread off topic again!

Yet again i totally disagree with you on this post.
Firstly, how on earth can you say this platform is evolving. The platform is just becoming a 2nd rate platform with a seriously freaky wanting to control everything attitude, and it now charges excessive prices for it's Draconian Changes. That is not evolving.
Secondly, many users that are private sellers and who used to buy on here a lot have more than enough sense to just roll over and accept things because this is not evolving or progressing in any way.

Maybe some people DO NOT want to change to a Business Account.
A lot of users are and were happy being private sellers. I was a private seller who brought a lot on this platform for 19 years, but since the beginning of this year I have liked this platform less and less.
I ended my listings in early April and yes it was MY CHOICE to do so.
Now I just loathe the platform for what it's become and because of it's greed and controlling mentality.

Of course Ebay want to control their own platform, they are not a charity or community interest company which I think a lot of private sellers thought they were after being given free listings and no fees for so long.
We will have to agree to disagree. You have chosen not to sell because the platform has evolved but for many of us, private and business, we will continue to buy and sell. It's a choice and no different to any other platform. It has changed and you either go with it or you don't.
I really think that this thread should be closed now as everything that needs to be said has been said and it's just one endless circle of repetition.

Maybe some people decide not to respond to some posts because they decide that some posts just aren't worth the time or effort.
