OK so listing some items tonight
good news first - even though Simple Delivery is now being pushed I can opt out to custom settings and select my standard shipping rates
bad news - I have to opt out of Simple Delivery every time I list even though I am listing similar items. Really?
This is from ebay itself: You can opt out of Simple Delivery when you're creating your listing by selecting Custom Postage from the delivery options. If you'd prefer not to use Simple Delivery at all in the future, you'll need to opt out each time this programme is recommended when you're creating listings.
I mean what does that last sentence mean anyway?

I hate the new system but the custom option is still there, on the desktop at least. It is under advanced options below postage set up.

Must be a country by country thing then or a category thing.
I listed a couple of things today in the UK and selected custom delivery.

I have been helping an elderly neighbour with selling her items ,she is in her 70s and hadn't sold anything for over a year and came back this month and was totally muddled by it all ,she was totally confused between simple delivery and special delivery, that she like to use for her expensive cameras ,I had all her items set on custom delivery and told her all she had to do was write the customers address on the parcels and take them down to post office because she hasn't got a printer ,but she keeps contacting me saying she can't find the QR code and so I just keep explaining to her that she doesn't need QR code ,and that simple delivery isn't the same as special delivery .She didn't even realise that there was a delay in payouts she thought the money went straight to paypal so I had to explain that to her and how to get her payment .She used to use her ipad for ebay but now they have cancelled the app on some devices it has left her with just her tiny phone to use that even I struggle with when trying to show her how to navigate everything .

I had a convo with CS about this and told them I can opt out and they were arguing not possible! Honestly if I am forced to use simple delivery or should we call it forced delivery... then after 19 years selling on Ebay, I'm gone.
A lot of my sales are low value under £10. Some of those are packages but mostly large letter. I'd be making little or no profit with SD. I buydiscounted postage stamps which enable me to still make a profit although granted, there's the occasional loss of an item goes walkabout. But that's not too often.
So I'll just keep opting out every time I list. It's only a small inconvenience but saves substantially in postage costs.

I cannot opt out as a private seller.

eBay has just about killed off selling cheap low value postcards with their Buyer Protection Fee, but now they're only giving the Simple Delivery as an option, with no custom postage option to purchase Royal Mail 87p 2nd Class.
So It now costs a buyer £4.47 to buy my 99p postcard, they get charged 76p Buyer Protection Fee (it's insured by the postal system anyway so why do they have to pay this?) and then £2.72 for simple Delivery, which gives a total of £4.47. All for me to make 99p and this is before I deduct the price of the envelope, protective sleeve and PayPal fees of 33p
This is an unsustainable model.
