Government issues ID after 19 years?

Hi

I have been selling with eBay fro 19 years, I recently moved and they suspended my account. They are asking for either a Driving License, Passport or Government ID card, none of which I have and none of which I want or need.

I've spoken with an agent 4 times over the past 2 days, 3 said 'oh you'll be fine with a birth certificate and a utrilty bills' (which I uplaoded but it didn't work) and today the final straw was a non-plussed lady saying 'yeah, you need to have photo ID and that's that, don't know why it's taken 19 years to ask and I don't care, bye'

What is this all about? You were happy enough to take a slice of my money for 19 years and now it's all 'stuff you'? How can a company demand you have a passport or driving license? seems suss to me.

Hi 1956glyn & kempseykate,

In order to be in compliance, the names on the docs you upload have to match the names in your eBay account. Otherwise, we won't be able to verify the information, as different names could mean that it could be a different person, which is why the names have to match.

This is all done for safety and privacy reasons, and we have to be in compliance, so while I understand that this is probably not ideal, we have to stick to all laws and regulations.

Thank you,

Marco

This is very unfair on married women 😞

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

Thanks for your reply, kempseykate.

You can always update your personal information in your eBay account as well. In fact, when you're uploading your docs, you are given the chance to update your personal information such as your full name, date of birth, etc, so you are not stuck in the process. Alternatively, you can update your personal information from your personal information settings here

Thank you,

Marco

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

Some of our bills are in my name or hubbys name or even joint names 🙂     Many years ago he moved in with me and some bills i just didnt bother changing.

When asked for id he just used his photo driving licence and that was accepted with no other issues.

I don't need to change my details in ebay they are correct.

Say I was born Kate Smith - birth certificate name 'Kate Smith'

Then I married a Mr Jones - and later divorced him.

I then married a Mr Brown - marriage certificate shows that Kate JONES married Mr Brown (and became Kate BROWN).

My ebay account and bank account are in the name of Kate Brown, my utility bill is in the name of Kate BROWN, but if I have to send a copy of my birth certificate and utility bill as proof of ID, the are never going to match - I haven't been Kate SMITH (as per birth certificate) for 50 years!
I can change my ebay account name to Kate Smith, but then it won't match my bank account or the name on the utility bill.

Like I said, very unfair to married women.

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

I wonder if Ebay is actively discriminating against women by doing this?  They can argue that they don't discriminate against those without passports or driving licences because they allow birth cirtificates, but if these don't work for married women, then what?

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

This is why it's so important to have some up to date proof of identity like a passport. Imagine having to prove who you are if your identity is stolen and you basically can't.

I don't want to pay for a passport I am never going to use - plus the fact I can never think of anyone who is on the 'accepted list' to verify my photo!
If the government want these checks, then everyone should have a government ID card.

And I can prove my identity with birth certificates etc - have done that recently - it just seems that ebay are too stupid to realise that a woman's name on her birth certifcate is likely to be different to her name now.

As I understand it a marriage certificate does not indicate a legal change of name; it simply states that person x married person y. Only a "Deed of Change of Name" from the Deed Poll Office indicates a legal change of name.

I actually think eBay are following the due diligence requirements of the Anti-Money Laundering Regulations correctly; any discrimination against married persons is due to the legal requirements contained in those regulations.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

Amazon accepted a marriage certificate as well as a full birth certificate. I do have an over 60s bus pass which has my photo on but not my address, I used it to vote in the general election but I doubt ebay would accept it.

They probably would if you were there for some other reason but not if it was the only purpose of your visit.

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

I recently requested my drs to sign my photo and application for a new photo driving licence.

They told me that they could not do it 😞    I was with the same dr for over 30 years before she retired and basically i speak to a dr nearly every month on the phone.    The issue is that none of them actually know me in person as everytime i phone them i seem to get a different doctor.

The girls on reception do recognise and know me .....nope it must be a Dr !!

Got a friend who owns their own business to do it in the end

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

You will have a marriage certificate or Deed Poll for the change of name

It also might be that the image you sent was unclear or did not have all 4 corners which if this was the case ebay will reject

try contacting customer services and getting them to ring you to find out what the problem is.

I know as it took ebay 5 months to reinstate my account as I do not have either passport or driving licence

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

Just a load of Cobblers, or put another way, pure Data Mining, if you are a Business then it looks like they have you over a barrel, if like me you are a private member, simply let them close you down and move your Business eleswhere, I deem it there lose as I spend around 15k a year buying on Ebay, but I could just as easy buy direct.

Think long and hard before handing over your personal data and before you do, please take a look at Ebay's Data Breaches, where there [that's mine and your] Data has been downloaded by Hackers to trade to others on the WWW.

Next it will be the Milkman asking for my DOB and prove of existance, before I get my morning Pint 😒

I am a dab hand with Desktop Publisher having over 4 decades of use and can give you any I.D.\Passport\Drive Licence \ DOB Cert in under 30min tops and you can use any pic you like with any DOB you like.

This is all about Data Mining and for what, to allow there databases to be hacked - see Ebay Hacked on Google.

I hold on my Ebay Account as a Private Seller, 6 Credit Cards + Debit Card and 2 Bank Accounts plus a Paypal Account from the good old days when Ebay would not let you sell unless you had one; Now they tell me that they need to verify me - Boll...

absolute total Boll.....

I will take my Business eleswhere and remember, Men who are scorned never return.

I don't know why you're telling me this, particularly when you're sticking a name and website address in your post too. I'm pretty sure that the services you're offering are illegal in the UK (and pretty much everywhere).

Offering these services on a public forum will likely get you a knock on the door.

Re: Government issues ID after 19 years?

I was not offering a Service, did I say that I was.

I was merely pointing out that supplying I.D is a farce and that anyone
with a computer can download software and produce any doc they wish.

Copy and paste of your exact words:
