Ebay's new buyer protection scam

So I have been a seller on and off her since June 2001, Over the years I have sent items recorded delivery that either never turn up , or arrive with no notification of delivery.  Now someone wants to charge a buyer a fee for safe delivery, when they would have been charged that in the P&P cost.  Frankly it sounds more like a scam than customer service and Ebay are also trying to force us to use their shipping option, So much for free enterprise, sound like trying to get the monopoly on delivery as well.  As for hanging on the sellers cash til 2 days after delivery, really so post office goes on strike and you don't get paid, Think I may start looking to leave. So much for eBay's loyalty to us .

Ebay's new buyer protection scam

I tried to sell yesterday and select the Royal Mail option but just kept going around in circles. In the end I used the “simple delivery option” and I will have to see how it goes. The postage is cheaper and I know the Royal Mail parcels are going up in April by at. least 30p.
It’s annoying that you can’t access your payments for a week or so….cant see why because they do have your bank details should anything go wrong.

When you take in to consideration that business sellers have to pay for subscriptions/listing fees, final value fees, regulatory fees, postage fees and then 20% vat on top on this - business sellers do not have a financial advantage.

It varies but usually higher priced items. Doesn't really matter what I sell, what matter is Ebay being transparent about the fees and showing them separate from what the seller is listing at. If you buy a holiday there are options for insurance but it is an option not  a given you must have it.

You are right. I would rather pay the old sellers fee than the buyer have to pay it.
They are following Vinted - and I don’t sell with them because if this.
Let’s hope EBay reverse this practice.

Good points, however, eBay said free and no fees for private sellers and then introduced BPF after a while. They seem totally unclear in what they are doing,  and the inconsistency of when a buyer pays and when the seller pays the extra is all over the place.  It's a mess of their own making.

..... I would rather pay the old sellers fee than the buyer have to pay it .....

Since you are a private seller, didn't I, as a buyer, ultimately pay those fees?

Absolutely it's of their own making. ebay made a big thing of the Money Back Guarantee and despite what they are told the charge is for (enhanced customer service etc) all buyers see is that they are being charged for something they already had or don't really need. There's no requirement for private sellers to pay anything although some may choose to drop their prices to make an allowance for BPF.

Ebay's new buyer protection scam

The BIG difference between Vinted and Ebay BPF is that when buying more than one item from a seller on vinted the BPF only increases by a miniscule amount , rather than the rip off price per item on ebay .I had a buyer that bought several items from me , the added cost was almost £12 !! Its all very shady IMOSent from my Galaxy

Really. I didn’t know that.
We will never get to sell anything shortly.
Maybe Vinted is the way forward.
Thanks for replying.

By calculating the costs in this way ebay just hands a massive advantage to Vinted.

Ebay will learn the hard way. Every private seller they loose which from the messages on this long post is massive then they also loose a private buyer but they are too stupid to see that. I buy all my items now on Amazon prime for £6 a month films free next day delivery its a no brainer. Ebay is a bit like those idiots that are in the White House just have no idea what the hell they are doing until its too late.

Yes. Also by hanging onto monies for a couple of weeks for every transaction they must be making a lot of interest ! (Whilst we are standing out the postage if we use Royal Mail. ).

They certainly have shown what is important to them based on the decisions they've made lately:

  • Buyer Protection Fee – a total lie, they are just pocketing the money
  • Holding private sellers money - earning interest/investing
  • Simple Delivery - once mandatory ebay will make money on every postage label for every item sold
  • Hiding listings - ebay are hiding sellers listings so they have to pay to make them visible again
  • Disabling the invoice facility - buyers are forced to pay BPF on each item so no combining orders now.
