I'm a private seller. Items I sell are between £2.90 - £10. Is It just me or will ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb make it near impossible to sell competitively. A few months ago Ebay got rid of Sellers' fees for private sellers, which was a welcome move. But this new change and getting rid of multi-buy discount for private sellers will make it worse than it was with the original fees.

THANKS EBAY for making Ebay a divided place to trade , due to the Ebay buyers protection fee , it has started a war between Private sellers and Business sellers ! and also excluded those genuine [private sellers from selling cheaper items on ebay , WHY do buyers need to pay for protection , THEY ALREADY HAVE THIS !!! , Its a con and Ebay will lose a lot of genuine private sellers who only have a little to sale from their own private collections etc , and buyers will get a charge as well

What is it even for , paying for all the scammers presumably.

I have sold 2 personal items over the weekend.
I notice the protection fee is added to my revenue and then deducted as a cost.
This is an incorrect statement by eBay as it increases my revenue value.
It is their revenue from the buyer nothing to do with me.

As someone with a private account why are you worried about 'revenue'?

I'm not worried. I am making a statement that eBay are putting their revenue generator for which they should pay tax onto the Seller.

Of course ebay will be reporting the BPF as revenue, along with all the other income they generate. Just because it's presented one way on your transaction report does not mean it's not their turnover.

That is very interesting.I wonder what they are trying to hide!!!
Nothing because it's a transaction report not a sales/revenue report for either the seller or ebay.
Is there no end to the conspiracy theories?

Stop it.
even as a private seller selling personal property, it can make a difference if it pushes the income limit over £1000
its a reasonable question from someone who doesn’t know how it’s going to work

The £1000 is a trading limit for businesses. It's intended to stop businesses with income under £1000 (which includes postage and before deductions) from having to submit self assessments. It does not apply to private sellers.
The limits private sellers have to concern themselves with are the reporting limits to HMRC - 30 sales or roughly sales of £1,700 in a year.

The trading allowance can also be used by the non business categories below :
The most common type of taxable miscellaneous income that you are likely to come across is hobby income. This is generally income from activity that is not a trade or profession – so they are not self-employed. However, payment has been or is agreed for the service or item. Typical examples of hobby income may include:
someone may receive payments for writing an article from time to time or selling a photograph occasionally
someone may buy and sell items (not of a capital nature), but as a hobby, not with a view to making a profit. This might be the case where they collect items, and occasionally sell items from their collection, or where they buy an item, carry out some work on it, and then sell on.

Thank you. This is a great answer. It fully explains.
Far better to expand than hint that a seller is hinting behind a private account when they just don’t understand the rules

I don't think ignorance is any excuse, but my views might have been influenced by almost 40 years of dealing with law breakers in my working life.

The new buyer’s protection fee is a massive disappointment. I’m actually in disbelief. It will put off sellers and buyers. Then there’s the new payment system which is off putting for sellers. The postage element of the sale should be put into a sellers account straight away.
The old system was better.

Absolutely. But rather than a short answer that comes across as sarcastic, is often giving no information whatsoever, use your experience to give comprehensive answers to educate genuine users
those who are not genuine will always find a loophole
