Ebay 2nd class Royal mail delivery times

Ebay are quoting next day delivery on Royal Mail 2nd class post, my customer is now demanding free upgrade to 1st class post as I was being upfront with her and told her 2nd class post can take 3-5 working days for delivery especially over Christmas.

I am sure the buyer will leave me negative feedback if I do not give her free upgrade, which will mean I will be in the minus.

What should I do?  Surely demanding free postage upgrade is against eBay policy?

Two questions:

  1. Have you posted the item yet?
  2. What is the latest (not the earliest) delivery date that was shown to the buyer?

eBay's idiotic "estimated delivery dates" have been causing sellers to have headaches for a while now. However, the buyer can only open an "item not received" case the day after the latest estimated delivery date they were given. This date can actually change from order placement to when the item shows as "dispatched" as well.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

You offer RM 1st Class postage option which they can choose if they want.

I've noticed my 2nd Class Large Letter 100g & 250g are taking 5-6 days last/this week.

As eBay states on my Customers Orders there may be a delivery delay with RM due to Pre-Christmas high volume at the moment which my Buyers can see.  I do not contact my Buyers after purchase regarding the RM delays but do answer any Customers queries, I get.

The feedbacks I received in the last week have not complained about the delivery delays.

Your adverts offer RM 1st & RM24 Tracked your Buyer did not choose, & even these can be delayed before Christmas.

So, I would send a polite message to the eBayer that she/he can cancel the order if the Courier's delivery delays are not suitable.

You would be protected by eBay’s abusive buyer policy as they are demanding something they didn’t select at checkout. If you get negative feedback you would have to speak to eBay, point this out to them and they should remove it.

If anyone needs a guide as to how post is going I use a mail blu-ray rental service (yes really, there is still one and a great way to see 4K titles without paying £50!) and the envelopes are all 1st Class Prepaid. The last batch of returns which are auto-scanned on arrival took 6 days to get from Bristol to just outside West London. One has still not arrived.

Forget 1st class, go onto the Royal Mail website and get Tracked 48 instead, might be quicker than 2nd class yet offers tracking throughout and, unless it's a large letter stamp, will probably be cheaper than 1st class anyway.

Failing that I would use the service that the buyer accepted when going through the checkout process. Any issues with the estimated delivery date is down to eBay and only eBay.

IMO it is ludicrous that 2nd Class is advertised as next day - this could not be farther from the truth, it is 2-3 days and potentially longer still at this time of year.

eBay like to be optimistic with estimated delivery dates and won't do anything sensible like adjust for Christmas post volumes.

I would tell the buyer that as you won't be able to meet their needs on the postage, you will cancel the order, and the buyer would be welcome to purchase again and pay for a postage upgrade option that suits their needs. That may seem harsh, but I would rather cancel than deal with a buyer who has already made it clear they aren't going to be happy.

Demands for something not included to breach eBay policy but only on feedback. Buyer could still open INR or a return and eBay won't help you there.

I don't see the point in switching from 2nd to 1st because neither is guaranteed and neither service is really prioritized. Your listing says "If you need your order urgently, please select 1ST class post", I wouldn't be suggesting 1st class there, I'd be suggesting Tracked 24.
