Broken teapot

I sold a willow tree Sadler teapot to a buyer through Yodel. I packed it tightly in bubble wrap,  yet the buyer said it arrived damaged. He sent me photos and demanded a refund.

I rang up Yodel, who said it had arrived unbroken. Apparently, the photos I sent Yodel confirmed the buyer had deliberately smashed it with a hammer.

So I refunded him, and then the buyer said he hadn't received the refund. So I sent him a screenshot that proved I had!

I'm autistic and refunded the buyer, but I've also blocked him. How do I stop this from happening again, please?

Hi Louise, sorry to see the state of that teapot. You were using good peanuts, they looked like the starch - ecoflo - ones. I used these for many years without any problems. I do use the cardboard roll that was shown in the video that 'jma2815' included. Cardboard roll is so much better than bubble wrap.
The other thing is the size of your box. I would look for packing in a larger size box. My go to size for a small teapot is 9x9x9.
However boxes are expensive to buy and the alternative is to double box your items.  If you source your boxes a crisp box is a good size and allows you to put the teapot in a smaller box inside.
You could use packing peanuts in the smaller box and then a crumple zone of newspapers in between the two boxes.
Most carriers do not cover any breakables. The exception is the new Simple Delivery by ebay which they claim does cover breakages. (Haven't had to try that!)
I would also recommend using Royal Mail rather than Yodel as your courier of choice.

As the cost of those eco-flo peanuts has increased significantly and the prices that teapots are selling for has decreased significantly I now just use crumpled paper as my alternative impact layer. So far so good.

I would ignore Yodel telling you the buyer smashed it with a hammer. I doubt anyone could prove it, so you would need to refund the buyer (as you have done already).

In terms of refunds - the process is that the buyer opens a case stating the item was damaged on arrival and you accept the case and the refund is provided automatically.
It is better to do that than just refund the buyer using another option/method. The case will show you have refunded. If the buyer claims they've not received it, tell them to discuss it with ebay.
I think it can take a few days after you accept the refund for the money to be back with the buyer.

Here's a Royal Mail video on packaging fragile items.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FJEC98_uhU

I would suggest a bigger and stronger box than she uses - preferably two boxes.
Also write “FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE” in capital letters on the cover or envelope above the address.

Some people have different views about how well different carriers look after packages; and different services from the same carrier can be treated differently.
E.g. Royal Mail Special Delivery should be passed to someone, not just left somewhere.

I suggest you look at the carrier's insurance/compensation policy and what it says about fragile items. It may be worth videoing the packaging used to show that it matches their guidelines, if you want to try and claim compensation from the carrier (outside ebay).

Depending on what you experience, the value of the items to you, how many you have etc. you may want to consider selling them somewhere else e.g. not posting them. Or you can sell on ebay with Collection Only for example.

I doubt you can literally stop it happening. Hopefully you can reduce the chances of it happening.

'Peanuts' are what foam chips are called, it's a term used in packaging.  See this link for an example:
