Better the Devil you Know ?.

Looking at the posts after Ebay announced that Sellers would now have to wait until orders were delivered and the buyer marked the order as delivered Vinted Style some said it might be time to change to another selling platform.

The obvious question is what is the alternative to Ebay and Vinted ?.  .A Google search for something & 1 result was for a site called DEPOP I’d never heard of it. Seemed legit, a multinational site looked like it’d be worth listing on. Account duly set up & although the uploading process is bizarre to say the least listings have no titles, limited scope for sizes, brand names, category etc etc I listed 100 items . On day one I placed 1 order, on day 2 I made 4 orders.

1st order sent & lost by Evri – Seller  issued refund with no arguments.

2nd order – Listing said posted same day if paid before 5pm.2 days later contacted seller who said order would be sent that day – same thing over the next 4 days. Finally  put in a claim for  a refund.

3rd order – £40 – sent with Evri & lost by Evri.Seller saying it is nothing to do with them as they posted. DEPOP taking sellers side even though tracking shows parcel was scanned into delivery  depot but was never delivered.

4th order sent by Evri and lost by Evri – Seller saying nothing to do with them and they are being backed up by DEPOP.

Seems DEPOP have a seller protection where all a seller has to do is issue a Tracking Number and that’s the end of their involvement.

5th Order – Again “Posts within 2 Days” 6 days on Seller not responding to messages and order not posted although an Evri Tracking number was given 30 minutes after order placed.

I made 5 offers on items which expired in 24 hours. Repeated the offers 3 times then gave up. No response from sellers not even a counter offer.

I have lost around £100 on orders that  have never been posted or have been lost by Evri there’s nothing I can do about it because payment is automatically made by Depop Payments not Paypal.

Then with no warning my account was deleted. A visit to Facebook Depop groups and the story is horrifying. Accounts being suspended or deleted and payment problems, scammers etc are rife on Depop.

In the space of just 3 weeks problems with all 5 orders and not 1 has been delivered.

Then there’s GUMTREE – HUH!! Been posting on there for over 20 years – maybe closer to 30 and not once have I made a sale. Within seconds of a listing going live there’s between 4 and 20 “ad views” and then nothing for weeks and months!!.Sellers do not respond to messages and don’t seem to actually want to sell. A few “ Do you still have this ?. “ messages about my own listings from people who never buy after you reply.

After listing on Gumtree all I ever do is delete listings and tick “no my ad was not successful” when stuff sells on Ebay or Vinted.

So what is the alternative?.

There isn’t one, realistically.  *In my opinion.

There have been a few specialist ones for stamps, music or tech mentioned here and some people are making claims (that I don’t believe) about having huge success this week moving to the other ‘general’ site with a name similar to ebay and of course for clothing there’s Vinted and depop, both of which I wouldn’t touch with a bargepole even though clothes are my thing. I’ve looked at them and they both just make me shudder.

I also make handmade clothes to sell but don’t get me started on etsy. Horrendous.

Gumtree is fine and busy if you put stuff up in the ‘freebies’ section but in my experience the moment you list for even a pound, there’s no interest at all. I think gumtree is lumped in with freecycle in most people’s minds, at least it is in my area. I don’t use facebook and amazon…I can’t imagine trying to sell on either.

I’m just not selling, for a while at least.
