I am an infrequent user of ebay, but recently sold two used chandeliers of the same size, and both were packed in the same size boxes.
When i generated my listing, i opted for simple delivery. one prepaid royal mail label ( with tracking no. ) was generated by simple delivery service, which i printed off and fixed to one of the boxes.
For the 2nd parcel, i purchased a separate express 48 tracked delivery service by royal mail, opting for the Royal mail bring a label service ( costing an extra 30 p for fixing and also paying for the largest parcel type postage under 30 kg ), whereby royal mail staff fix the label to the parcel.
Both parcels were collected at the same time on the same day from my home address by the same royal mail staff. I didnt see the contents of the label stuck to my 2nd parcel by royal mail.
The first indication that something wasnt quite right, was when I received a royal mail tracked message, saying they couldnt collect the parcel ( even though they had collected it at the same time as the 1st parcel ). I contacted royal mail complaints & was assured it had been collected and they would send a message to the relevant royal mail depot.
Two days later I then received a message from the buyer asking me to explain the contents of the two pictures he had sent me. The pictures are allegedly of the 2nd item that I sent ( tracking label generated by me via Royal Mail ).
One showed my tracking label on an amazon package, the 2nd showed an image of what looks like a birthday card/label I assume they're the contents of the amazon package ).
The amazon package was very small in comparison to my parcel ( around 54x54x46 ). I checked the tracking no for this 2nd parcel on the royal mail website and could see an image of the amazon package being handed to a recipient at the correct address on my label, though I cant see the contents of that label in that image.
Obviously I didnt send an amazon parcel ( i took photos of both boxes ( and contents ) before posting, one with a simple delivery tracked label and the second without awaiting the label to be fixed by Royal Mail staff ).
I have made a complaint to royal mail, however has anyone got any views on what has happened here ?
Is it a scam or is it royal mail incompetence ?
Anybody ever come across this type of scenario before ? If so what was the outcome from ebay and royal mail pov's ?

This is my understanding of your message.
The 2 chandeliers were advertised on one advert, so 1 Buyer made the purchase of the 2 chandeliers and paid on one transaction.
You packed the chandeliers separately.
SD Postage label issued to you was put on one parcel. Then you purchased a separate RM48 postage label yourself for the 2nd parcel which the RM Courier attached on collection.
The Buyer received the 1st parcel ( with SD postage). The RM48 postage label turned up attached to a smaller package.
Seems that either the label attached itself to another parcel during transit, or the Courier printed a copy of your label (by mistake) at their next collection & attached to the Amazon package which got delivered to your Buyer (leaving your 2nd Parcel still in their delivery van).
You did the right thing complaining to the Royal Mail & they will/should get back to you with their findings.
Your Buyer will probably contact eBay regarding the missing chandelier. This is where it gets tricky as eBay's records will show the sale of 2 chandeliers on one transaction, but the Buyer only received one. It will be up to eBay to decide how to solve the problem for the Buyer.
