Account suddenly temporarily restricted after listing first item?

Hi

I opened up an eBay account 4 days ago. I added my debit card. verified my mobile number and email address, and then made one purchase for a small amount of money. This evening I have gone to list a relatively cheap item (£30) which would have been my first sale, and suddenly my account was restricted. Any ideas as to why?

I did use eBay before, for many years, and was an active user. But that account was very recently closed, by my request. My card isn't linked to any other account or anything like that. I was also told by an agent that it wouldn't be an issue at all to open up a new account once my previous one was closed.

It may be that you have not fully or correctly registered with eBay's Managed Payments.  Did you receive those micro deposits and confirm these back to eBay?

See here:

You need to provide eBay with details of a bank account and have this account verified.  The usual method here, is for eBay to send 2 micro deposits into that nominated bank account for you to receive,  and confirm to eBay.

Once this is completed,  you will be able to list items for sale,  and receive payouts from those sales.

This will show you how to register for eBay's Managed Payments.

If there is an issue with the registration contact eBay Customer Services,  who have full access to your account,  and can see where the issue lies and explain the steps you now need to take.

Contact them this way.

This is the easiest and quickest way to contact eBay Customer Services, for a Call Back option.

Lines open 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. on weekdays

9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on weekends.

Automated agents will be available on chat outside of the above hours.

I recommend contacting CS first thing in the morning as there's more chance of Dublin answering.

Ahh, no. None of that. I just tried to list an item but it wasn't allowing me due to some postage error that kept appearing. It's only after many attempts of getting it to allow me to list that the restriction message appeared in my inbox. I'll do as you suggested and contact them asap. Many thanks!

Account suddenly temporarily restricted after listing first item?

I just spoke to someone who seems to be in Asia. She was very sweet but told me that the restriction is permanent and can't be changed on her end. No idea why, no explanation was given, but as I only really planned to use it to purchase things it's not a big deal. Would love to know how eBay works though, how they come to these conclusions!

Were there any issues with your old account?

Does anyone else in your household have (or ever had) an account that received any kind of restriction?

That is very bad news as a permanent restriction means a lifetime ban, no comeback from that.

It's not given out lightly.

You say your previous account was recently closed?  Who closed it, eBay?  That means it had some restrictions which you should have received an email explaining this.

Opening a new account , it would be linked to the old and receive the same restriction, otherwise it would just be easy to avoid a permanent ban by just opening a new account.

I'm afraid you will not be able to sell on eBay again with a permanent restriction, and eBay will not discuss the matter further with you.

The eBays Members advice to contact eBay in Dublin is a good idea to try & get a clearer view why a restriction has been put in place on your account.

There are many reasons why this can happen & eBay Customer Services are able to see any problems that may have of occurred in the past that you may be unaware of.

We are eBay Members on this Discussion Forum who can only guess why you have this problem which is not giving you a satisfactory answer.

All the Best & hope it is sorted out for you quickly.

Account suddenly temporarily restricted after listing first item?

I closed my now old account at my own request. It had no issues at all and I had the option to become one of those top rated sellers. But I was being forced to become a business account, due to selling items for other family members, who at the time didn't have their own accounts. I didn't think it would effect anything then, obviously I was wrong! That's on me for being unaware that selling more things suddenly would have a consequence. I spoke with eBay about this and they literally suggested I close the account and open up a private seller one, which is what I did. So doing so has led to me being permanently banned!

Not really a biggie as mentioned. My girlfriend, who lives in a different location to myself, has an account I can use to buy stuff should I wish to. But after 12 years of being a customer it leaves a bit of a sour taste in one's mouth to bow out like this, when I only really did what an agent suggested weeks ago.

I think you have found the reason there. I also think the ebay rep gave you really bad advice.

If you were told to upgrade to a business account but instead closed that account and opened a new private seller account then it would be picked up straight away from your details as still being you. The moment you listed something for sale, it's been flagged as fee avoidance and bam, you're toast. They really shouldn't have told you to do that.

Close that account and open an account with a different email address.

I was actually told that twice by two different eBay agents. The first one suggested it, and then when I closed my account, another confirmed and re-assured me that I was more than welcome to open up a new private account, but recommended I only sold any items for myself and not also for family members this time. I used a different debit card on this new account than previously, though still in my name. I did also accept the business account, I didn't have a choice. But only purchased things once that kicked in, and didn't list/sell anything.

Customer services, particularly the far east, are notorious for giving the wrong advice and will say anything they think the caller wants to hear to end the call.

As OP was told  the restriction is permanent  they cannot open another account.

If you close your account you can never have one again. I will be closing mine asap and never want one again. You have had a lucky escape many of us are going to leave but they will not let us go easily

The best thing to do is not take it personally (even though that is really hard to achieve), because there are many, many people in your position. Permanently banned and have no idea why. eBay don't tell them why. It's just weird to not tell people why. But at least in the margin we have all the lovely images of happy sellers crowded round their laptops smiling and having fun. So... phew! The illusory corporate image is safe at least. (Those images are of real sellers, right?) 😕

As each day goes by and I read more about what eBay are doing to people, I actually feel sorry for eBay as they are creating their own long-term demise at the same time as believing they are going from strength to strength. Castles built on sand are not castles forever.

Yes you can. You're free to open a new account whenever you want if you chose to close your account as opposed to having it forcibly closed by ebay. Ebay want people to use the site, they don't ban you just because you've previously chosen to close an account.
