Royal Mail Tracked 48 Medium Parcels costs £8.05 over the counter, so SD still seems a good deal to me. Do you know you can opt out of Royal Mail for Simple Delivery? Of course, you have to choose the platform that seems right for you.

£8.05 is the price for Tracked Signed For. Ordinary Tracked 48 Medium Parcel Upto 2Kg is £6.55 over the counter and £5.15 online (the same price as Simple Delivery will be from Monday).

why opt out of evri ? I just post it with whatever label is generated, post it, get a receipt and then anything that goes wrong from then on is eBays problem, superb, i never have to deal with any problems with shipping again.
Now I've got the hang of it, I think simple delivery is one of the best things they've done.

Evri's no good to people who don't have one of their collection points nearby so they'd need to de-select it. They also have a lower maximum weight, despite having a larger maximum size.
I've got a news-agent and Post Office who take them but I've still got them switched off because they don't do collections via Simple Delivery whereas Royal Mail do them for free. That saves me at least half-an-hour a parcel and no going out in pouring rain, roasting heat &c.
