Seller verification ID

I have been asked by eBay to provide proof of ID.

I sent my most recent passport (expired 2022) - IT WASN'T ACCEPTED

I don't have a driving license as I have never driven

I sent a photo of my Birth Certificate (issued at birth - in the UK) - IT WASN'T ACCEPTED

Can someone please tell me what will

As per this page

We accept the following forms of valid identification:

Entity typeDocument type
Individual
  • Valid Passport
  • Valid Photocard Driver's License

They won't accept an out of date passport and they won't accept a birth certificate

As I mentioned in my post;

I don't have a valid passport (don't need one as I have no plans to travel abroad)

I don't have a driving license (I'm in my 50s and have never driven a car)

What CAN I use?

I was born in the UK so don't have government accepted ID (apart from a birth certificate)

I have utility bills, bank statements, a P60 etc

At the moment eBay are withholding my payments, as far as I can see unfairly (illegally???)

They will be verifying your identity under know your customer checks. This is a requirement of anti money laundering  regulations. I would argue they should certainly do this BEFORE you start selling though most companies will do these checks periodically anyway.

Like I say, eBay in their policy state they will only accept a valid passport or driving licence. There are no requirements under KYC to accept anything else, it is up to the companies to simply show they have done due diligence.

i am not aware of if they accept any other proof, you would need to maybe request a call back from customer services.

I have tried repeatedly to contact eBay directly, but they make it nigh on impossible.

I have given them my bank details, national insurance number, birth certificate, passport number and I now have REAL fears that I am in danger of being hacked.

I am a UK citizen, born here, and have made less than £600 this year from my selling (and have probably spent more on purchases).

I am seriously rethinking my future use of eBay as it looks like they are just harvesting information.

They aren’t, they are carrying out KYC, primarily to do anti money laundering checks.your expired passport number won’t mean anything, because that number won’t exist anywhere anymore.

for reference let’s say you wanted to try Vinted instead. Vinted gave the same requirements. And in fact state the same, they accept either a driving licence or a passport.

If they accept a provisional, that’s £34, which might be worth it to unlock £600

You haven't helped at all.

You're now advising me to spend £34 on a driving license I will NEVER need. (A passport, which admittedly would cost a little more, is something that I COULD use in the next 10 years).

I asked for assistance, NOT for someone who argues on BEHALF of eBay.

Their (your?) rules are not user friendly, and just seem to be to collect personal data for their (your?) future personal use.

eBay make it IMPOSSIBLE to obtain a quick response to a fairly easy question.

If you can't offer a solution to my problem, please refrain from answering (unless you can advise me how to contact an eBay employee directly (NOT a chatbot).

Be aware that there are a few ebay shills that try to portray themselves as neutral contributors to topics on here

The same names keep popping up on numerous threads with 'advice'

Are they employed by eBay? ( Or at least receiving 'kickbacks' from them?)

I was responding to the 'expert' advice offered by someone who has next to no listings but seems to pop up on numerous topics towing the ebay line

As I said - the same people keep appearing on topics quoting 'ebay policy'

Do you have an account with ebay yet?

Have you made any sales?

Marco has said in the past that they will accept a birth certificate (with proof of address as well as well). You do have to make sure you have a scan/photo of the whole of the certificate.

I've had an account for more than 5 years.

A couple of hundred sales.

99% (ish) positive feedback.

No they can't.

The solution is clearly shown in eBay's help pages, they want photo ID from a passport or driving license.

If don't have either of these, then jog on.

Criticising people on here trying to help and accusing them of being eBay stooges simply indicates your own lack of understanding of how these discussion forums operate.

You may also want to Google "posting I.D."

Many contributers on here use them including me because I don't want you buying from me

i provided a copy of info from an eBay policy page. KYC is the reason they want this information. This is a fact.

another poster has now said they will accept, in some instances a birth certificate. But they would need to contact eBay to verify this.

how much I list is absolutely irrelevant. If it please the peoples court, I work for a company who list on eBay and have down since 2016.

as it is, I’ll leave you to advise the OP. Good luck chuck.
