How would you really value your collections?

Hi

First off, im new here to the whole eBay Groups and this board.. but what ive read so far it could be interesting...

i've been an avid colector of the World Cup Albums (only) since 1990 and have multiple complete albums and loose sets from 1974 to present date. I obviously know what ive paid for mine and enjoyed the time spent with my kids completing albums and my own time preserving them.. my real question is this:

how would you value all sets in todays markets away from eBay prices? obviously a loose mint set is worth more than a completed album and a completed album without writing in is worth more than one with writing, but, what about a complete album SEALED from production lines with the stickers and backs intact but unviewed? i ask as i have a USA 1994 and Korea Japan 2002 like this, unopened from the factory.. now im eager to look at the beauty of my album and its contents but would hate to devalue it

whats everyones thoughts?

In general Ebay is the one place you can determine its value as its all based on if someone wants what your selling or have. My rule is after every world cup or euro each past sets increases in value by at least 20% if noy more! however mass production from 2008 onwards may cause this rule to come unstuck!

yeah i hear what you're saying and i dont disagree. items such as panini must have their own unique market out there somewhere for avid collectors and not just the eBay jockeys?

obviously i live by the rule that "its only worth what someone will pay, not what its valued" but there has to be exceptions out there?

ive noticed that some years, even newer, fetch larger sums. For example i've seen a 2002 loose set bring twice as much as a 1986 complete MINT album before. what kind of figures, as collectors/sellers/enthusiasts, do you generally put on items?

my preferences are:

MINT album and MINT loose - highest (factory sealed???)
MINT album complete no writing
MINT album complete with writing ???

those are top 3 but where do the rankings change? sealed packs? loose and sleeved? damaged staples? water damage? peeled or damaged/colour fade?

its an ever changing market and with the mass production and fakes its easy to fall into the trap with online auctions.. are there places outside of the online sales to do business and where?

im not looking for a fight or big debate here, im simply interested as a football fan and collector of what, in my opinion, are the best produced memorabilia on the market

I agree lets see what some of the regulars think?

personally loose sets and packets are always a winner - I think the 2002 was a really under produced set much like the rare badges from 1998, This shows in the value of 2002 boxes still being more then the 98 france version.

I agree about 98 and 2002 !! got to look behind that, found that france 98 was the 1st 32 teams cup, and panini did not make

good estimate and over produced from that set!! but it is still a lucky set, why!?

most wanted badges, and spain rare fancy badge and players !! plus england 3 players!! all of these stickers still available

inside packs but Iran players set has to be found in UK only!!

watch out for investing as euro 2004 set & packs just started catching value and they will be fire priced in 2 years !! thanks for

panini mass production since 2004!!!

so you, as collectors and sellers, open and display loose sets from a factory sealed album or would you keep them shrink wrapped in the album?

i have a couple albums where they have come from factory and the stickers are loose (out of packet) inside the album and then sealed and wrapped for shipping..

me personally i like to look at the stickers and flick through the album from time to time but whats more valuable?
