I opened a ' item not received case' but a package arrived 3 days later and contained the wrong item. A similar part but with a totally incompatible specification to the one pictured in the listing , which I ordered.

I can't open a return because the non arrival case is still open.

Does anyone know if cancelling the open case would still leave the option to open a second case on the same transaction for a return and refund?

This is the only time you can open 2 cases for the same item, bit not at the same time.

So yes, you need to close the ' item not received case' and proceed this way now......

Go right of the item in your Purchase History and from More Actions select... Return this item selecting the reason Item Does Not Match Description or Photos.

The seller needs to accept this case within 3 days and refund, if they want their item back first , they need to pay for that fully tracked return postage, then on receipt of their item they have 48 hours to refund you. If they don't , need to escalate the case, ask eBay to step in, and they'll force the refund.

Never listen to any excuse or promise from the seller to close the case early, and do not forget to escalate.
