I got an email saying I was bidding for something that I did not bid for. I didn't 'win' the item, but I could have.

You haven't given us much to go on, but it sounds as though another bidder may have placed and retracted a bid, leaving you as the winning bidder?

This is not uncommon, if this is what happened. eBay does remind bidders that bids remain live unless retracted. So you may still emerge as the winning bidder if a later and higher bid is retracted. In this situation, you have won the listing and are required to pay for the item.

If this is not what happened, could you please explain what did?

I got a follow up email saying I was out bid, and suggesting other similar
items, but I did not bid in the first place. I am worried another email
will come saying I have put in a bid for something I did not bid for.
