Why am I not receiving messages from customers through the ebay system?

I have had many messages, through my personal email address, from customers who say they have sent many messages to me through the EBay system but none of them are received by me. Can anyone explain this?

How did they get your email address?

Ebay messages also get delivered by email, so if messages do not arrive then that is a back up.
