Stolen item for sale

I have spotted an item for sale on eBay that belongs to me. I am satisfied that the seller is not the one who stole it and acquired it in good faith. I have contacted the seller to inform them of the situation asking them to remove the item from sale and return it to me. They have replied, explaining that they bought it at a charity shop or local market a while ago (I believe them) .

I have offered them a fair sum to cover the cost + P&P. via the best offer option. While they have acknowleged the situation, they have not responded to my offer. The item has little commercial value but is precious to me as it belonged to my late mother.

I've contacted ebay and they say I must contact the police. I am reluctant to do this as I don't want to get the seller in trouble or damage his ebay status if he bought the item innocently. Also, I doubt the police will do anything or if they do it will take an age, by which time the item will be long gone.

What should I do?

There is nothing you can do here except to contact the Police, hopefully when it was reported stolen it's been mentioned and has some kind of identifiable mark on it, else the Police won't have anything to work with.

Personally, if it meant a lot to me and has little value I'd just buy it back.

Thanks for your reply,

I was unaware it was even missing until I spotted it for sale here on eBay. The item is clearly identifiable as belonging to me as it has my name and address on the packaging used to contain it photographed in the listing.

I'll give the seller some more time to respond to my offer. If he doesn't respond or sells it to someone else, I'll have no option but to contact the police as advised.

To be honest, the Police aren't going to do anything for a low value item being sold on eBay that hasn't even been reported as stolen, and I doubt that the seller will engage with you, they may even block you from buying from them.

Bear in mind that your options here are very limited.
