Simple delivery

If I offer free postage I am struggling to understand how simple delivery (sd) is a good idea? I only ever use royal mail tracked parcels 48 or 24 and sometimes upgrade the listing to royal mail next day guaranteed for valuable or fragile items. If sd automatically chooses the cheapest, standard option, (I will obviously block evri on my postage preferences), I will then have to pay for a separate postage label if I want to upgrade to royal mail guaranteed next day delivery because ebay will default the postage label to the standard, cheaper royal mail delivery service, andebay will pay for the label from my account.  This would be utter madness. To avoid paying twice for a separate postage label for valuable or fragile items that need the better next day delivery I would then have to cancel the sale. Is this mad situation avoidable? Obviously ebay haven't consulted any actual sellers before introducing sd. Does anyone have any ideas how this will work?

SD is a farce.

You may be better upgrading to business seller, then you can set your own postage.
