I'm wanting to list a PC GPU for sale at around £700 but ebay is forcing me to use royal mail 48hr postage that as a max cover of £150, would i just be expected to take the loss on the chin or dose ebay cover this.
i would normally only use royal mail special delivery

Ebay cover items for up to £750 even if the service they are offering is RM 48. I assume they have negotiated a deal with Royal Mail.
If the item is not delivered (lost in the post) or damaged in transit, it is covered up to £750 and Ebay would deal with the buyer's claim.

No, you can't pick a different service. The one offered by SD is all you need as far as insurance cover is concerned.
