Hello,
I've just had really stressful and unpleasant transaction with a first time ebay seller. I sent a message to ask if would be open to an offer and he said yes. I then sent the offer using the "make offer" button. The seller then told me the offer was lower than what I had sent.
I send a screenshot and he sent me his and his was indeed lower. I explained that I didn't understand what was happening as this is the first time in many, many years of buying that this had happened. (I've never had an issue with any seller related to this before). Over the course of a few more messages trying to understand and resolve this with him he was just rude and aggressive and told me he would not be replying to me again.
Anyway, long story short after he sent me an offer for the full asking price and I countered with a slightly higher offer he eventually apologised and accepted the offer. Then he accused me of stiffing him for the seller fees! I resented this and asked for a refund. He then said that as he had payed for postage then he says the transaction will proceed.
Unbelievable!
Anyway, I'm trying to figure out what the hell just happened. When a seller gets an offer, does ebay reduce my offer by subtracting seller fees? In all my years of making offers, I've never encounted this before, so if it ever happens again, I'm going to be able to respond with advice to the seller.
Thanks in advance if any light can be shed on this. I don't usually like to give negative feedback, but in this case I think I will.

A buyer offers what they want to pay so the seller gets less because the Buyer Protection Fee is taken off that amount.

If you as buyer send an offer of £5 the seller is shown an offer of £4.11 as that is what they will receive, plus of course any postage.
Like everything on ebay now, “simple” it is not.

Thank you!
That makes sense now. Yes, exactly, the seller needs to accept or reject the offer based on what the final amount will be less fees. This seller was accusing me doing something wrong (implied nefarious) and refusing to communicate until I had fixed it! I've never sold using offers so I really don't know what happens on that end.

I don't know if ebay could make this clearer for a new seller, and I hope it's well documented somewhere. Also handy for a buyer like me to know, which I do now, thanks 🙂
