Does anyone know how I can check if an item I have bought is safe to store food when the seller will not answer the question? Its a jute hessian sack to store potaoes that smells strongly of kerosene/petroleum. I've done a lot of reasearch, a lot of which tells me its not safe to store food as it should be treated with vegetable rather than mineral oil for this purpose. The smell suggests mineral oil has been used. I'm very concerned due to the number of people who have bought this item and the damage it could do to their health. The company I bought it from will not respond when I ask for information about its safety around food items.

If you are not happy with the item, then the best way forward would be to open a return and send it back to the seller.
A business seller would have to accept a 'change of mind' return.
I doubt anybody in this forum will be prepared to advise on the safety of the item and you state you have already done some research.
As it is intended to store vegetables, the only answer the company could provide is that it is safe. If you think it isn't, then send it back.

Really, although your concern is admirable, I don't see what you can do apart from leave negative feedback to tell other buyers about your experience. I would keep it brief and factual.
And, without being flippant, we do manage to survive quite well despite all the dangerous chemicals.
Average UK lifespan in 1924 was 58.
Today it is nearly 82 and my own dad lived to be 94, living independently until he was 93.

Just to add, I own and use a hessian potato bag which I bought in person from a shop.

I tried to do that yesterday but I can't for a week. If you're leaving a positive review you can do it immediately 🤨.
I have to say I'm happy to hear your father has lived so long with no health issues. That's amazing bless him. He is extremely lucky. Although I do believe nowadays that a lifespan does not always equate to a healthspan. My own personal history prooves this. For many years I just existed, until I took my health and life into my own hands.
I have heart and lung issues now as a long term side effects of extreme cancer treatment and subsequent pharmaceuticals many years ago. Meaning I have not had good health since the age of 26. Every drug/toxin they put into my body gave me further health problems (including epilepsy). So I am well aware that lifespans do not necessarily equal health spans. The best thing I ever did was remove toxins from my body and environment. Despite the irrepairable damage caused, and that my lifespan will be reduced, my healthy ways of living are what are keeping me going. The drs told me I would have wasted away years ago, and that's when I decided to take my health into my own hands.
The bag itself is in the bin now. I've also seen reviews on Amazon that agree with me. Perhaps they are highly sensitive to chemicals like me. In my case it may have been the huge amount of toxins that drs gave me over the years that has given me this gift. My body recognises a dangerous toxin immediately now. Its obviously had enough of them. Personally I feel this is like a superpower 🤣. I'm lucky that I can recognize and remove the toxin immediately. Thus neutralizing the further threat to my body. The problem is most people don't realise what the toxins in their food and environment are doing to them. Then years later they become sick and have no idea why. It's well documented that a lot of damage is being done to peoples' health because of the toxins in our food, environment, and the goods we buy. I feel these dark times happened to me so that I can warn others of the dangers. Which is why I will continue to do so at every opportunity I can. Then everyone has free will to decide what they feel for themselves. Even if only one person listens and also decides to cut toxins out of their diet and environment then its been worth it.

I also believe it's foolish to not believe what is very clearly the truth. However, we are all masters of our own destiny. It's important to respect another persons opinion, even if you do not agree with it.
I often ask of peoples opinions why do they believe that to be so. The answer with me is easy as I have personal experience and proof.

A 'home furnishings retailer'.

Thank you but I won't be doing that then. Home furnishing retailers usually put toxic fire retardent spray on their furnishings nowadays. I'll stick to brown paper bags for now.
We bought a new mattress 18 months ago and it made me the sickest I've been for a long time due to the smell from the fire retardent spray. My superpower kicked in and I knew something was terribly wrong. After weeks of fighting with the bed company they finally took it away to be tested. In turns out there was twice the amount of fire retardent spray on it than there should be. Yet again my superpower was right. It has never been wrong. We ended up spending more on a wool mattress from elsewhere which is naturally fire retardent. It was perfect from day one.
