STOLEN BRASS INSTRUMENT

Our gold brass cornet was stolen from our car in the Whitechapel area of London on 25th July 2025.

Can we make it to hot to handle?

Is there a way of tracking if someone tried to sell it?

Model number 4330G

Identification number C01827

No-one is helping and the police can't be bothered.

I would guess there are not that many cornets listed on the site.

If you do spot it on Ebay, you can use the report item link, but Ebay's official line is that you should inform the police if you spot a stolen item on the site,

Hopefully your insurance company is being helpful.

It's all a very long and I suspect deliberately protracted process...if I
see it I'll report it, it's crazy that there are no safeguards to prevent
stolen instruments from being circulated. Meanwhile I have a devastated
youngster who feels violated.

I've no idea if there's something that may enable you to identify your cornet from a photo, it's unlikely that a seller would add a serial number to their listing description, but click on the following link and then the little blue heart to save this search, then check it on a daily basis. It's set to newly listed items so a quick glance will show you if any new ones have been added:

Just bear in mind that even if you do spot it for sale here, eBay won't take any action if you report it yourself.

They will require you to report it to the police and get a crime number. It will then be up to the police to contact eBay, if they decide to do so. By which time the item may be long gone. I hadn't thought about this before, but recent eBay's prohibition on cash sales and requirement to pay through checkout may help to track transactions for stolen items.

You can find eBay's policy on stolen property here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/stolen-property-policy?id=4334&st=3...

For your information - although it's potentially dangerous and I'm certainly not suggesting that you should do this yourself - quite a few eBayers have actually bid on their own, stolen items, either to get them back or try to find out who the seller is.
