Return request but item used

hi please can someone assist.

I sold an item in December, an Apple pen. I scanned the barcode and a description came up suggested by EBay but I didn’t notice the description was the wrong generation pen. So I advertised it incorrectly in the narrative however the pictures show clearly which generation it was. This was an unused item ( and unwanted present).

I understand now that I listed it incorrectly.

A month later the buyer has contacted me having tried to use the pen saying it does not work as it is wrong generation. What is my next course of action? 

The pen has been opened and used.

If 30 days have passed the item's last estimated date for delivery then the buyer cannot claim any refund from eBay,  they're too late.

If that timeline hasn't lapsed , you will have to refund if they open a case for item not as described,  citing Item Does Not Match Description or Photos.  It had to be opened to be used , to see it was not working as it should.

They can also try their payment provider,  if they wish to pursue a refund.

Then they are way out of time to claim from eBay.

Send them a polite message explaining this.

It was misdescribed , you could offer a partial refund if you wish to, but not obliged to and again,  it could not be done through eBay.  

If you wish to offer a partial refund,  come back and I'll explain how.
