Return issues

I opened a return for an item that wasn’t as described, but I accidentally selected “wrong size” as the reason. Now seller says I have to pay for return postage, even though it would cost £16 to send back to China and the item only cost £25.

The seller refuses to provide a valid return label and gave this address, which Royal Mail won’t accept because it’s missing a name:

shantoushichaoyangqulingjingyamaoyiyouxiangongsi
chaoyangqutongmengzhenshengqianhuannanlu160hao301
shantoushi, Guangdong, 515136

There’s no option to change the return reason or escalate to eBay — the “Ask eBay to step in” button isn’t showing. PayPal also told me to contact eBay, but there’s no clear way to reach them.

Has anyone had success getting eBay to reopen or escalate a return like this? What’s the best way to get eBay involved when the wrong reason was selected by mistake?

What was wrong with the item why wasn't it as described?

The seller is unfortunately correct you have to pay return postage on remourse returns for which yours would be selecting wrong size.

Two things where did the item come from when you had it delievered eg UK address or actually from China? If it came from a UK address then it must be returned to a UK address and not China. These are the rules.

Secondly (although I doubt) you could try and talk to ebay via this link to see if they will change the case to a INAD (Don't hold your breath they only do this on rare occasions). If you are going to talk to them then wait until the morning as you would have a better chance of talking to someone in Dublin.

In the meantime do NOT close the existing case, and the address the seller has sent you is also cause for you to speak to Ebay as its not spaced correctly. Royal Mail would accept that address if you told the post office the name was Shantou Shichaoyang however the reat of the address for me doubts the item would ever arrive, so best to check with ebay CS and their files.

The reason you chose is classed as a change of mind return which the buyer usually pays for.

Now your case has been closed it cannot be reopened, sorry.

You could try your payment provider, if you used Paypal you could try first opening a case with them.

The item was a fancy dress costume. The description said everything in the image was included, however the wig in the image was not.

The size was also wrong, it was a sold as adult UK medium, we checked the dimensions beforehand, however the dress was comically small, like child size.

Either way the missing wig was not as described, did not realise when selecting the reason that would completely cut me off from speaking to ebay about the matter.

I accidentally selected “wrong size” as the reason.

Being the "wrong size" is not the same as "does not fit," which is classed as a change of mind. If the item received was not the size selected from the listing this is a matter of fact.

If you can appeal through eBay, do so. Otherwise, if you paid by PayPal, you could file a dispute under their buyer protection policy. Be careful how you describe the fault!

Last chance saloon is to try your credit or debit card provider, according to how you paid.

I'll give the seller one last chance to respond,  and try link @tommystrezures suggested tomorrow morning. The dispute expires tomorrow, if no resolution and can't speak to Ebay will have to retrieve money back from American Express. Just hope doing so won't leave my paypal or ebay account in a bad state. I don't normally initiate returns and this is by far the worst experience I've had, so hopefully not. The lack of ability to contact ebay directly is definitely putting me off from using the platform in future.

Just to put your mind at ease, one return will not put your eBay account in a bad state, if too many returns are opened then eBay may place buying restrictions on that buyer,  but not after one case.

eBay is contactable through the link provided above,  it is 24 hours, but ' live agents'  aside to automated chats, are only available between 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. on weekdays,  and 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.  on weekends.  I do strongly recommend contacting CS first thing when lines open for live agents,  as there's more chance of Dublin answering.
