Refund amount reduced - not returned yet!

I started a return for an item no longer needed which I have not opened yet. I have received £6.39 for the item for which I paid £12.76, the seller stating 'deducted from the item price because it wasn't returned in the original condition'. I still have it in my possession as they have not issued me with a return label yet!

It sounds like the seller doesn't want the item back and refunded in part!
