Private seller of used laptop. VAT added to customer?

I have a UK eBay account and sold a used laptop that I left at my parent's house Italy. I added the Italian address as the shipment origin and as shipment address in my account.

Why the customer has been charged 20% VAT? The laptop has never been to the UK!

Because your selling internationally,and Vat is part of the sale

If you're using a UK registered account, then even if the item location is Italy and the item is being shipped to a delivery address in Italy, import VAT will still be added.
