Postage

I sent an item without using the label generated by eBay, it was with the same courier I just paid it myself (the courier had sent me a code to get cheaper postage), so I opted to use this instead and populated my tracking reference for the item and it arrived etc so no problem there, but eBay have only paid me the money for the item and not for the unused postage, meaning I am out of pocket.

I was thinking eBay would see I hadn't used their postage and pay me that back as well, I've tried contacting eBay but there seems to be some issue getting to chat to an agent; is there anything else I can do to get the other maney from eBay ?

  • If you selected 'Buyer pays’ when you created the listing, your buyer will automatically be refunded for any Simple Delivery label that isn’t used after 30 days

  • If you selected ‘Seller pays’ and offered free postage on your listing, you'll need to fill out the Request a refund for Simple Delivery form for the label that wasn’t used. Make sure to send your request within 14 days of your item selling.  Also ensure you add the replacement tracking number of the service used, and it shows delivery.

Thank you for your help, I've just submitted the request for the refund from the link; now keeping fingers crossed.

I don't think you quite understood the previous response.

Unless you offer free postage (seller pays) on your listings, and that is not the case with your recent sales, you will not get a refund.

For the item you sold on 1st September, there was a postage charge to your buyer of £2.94.

The buyer paid this to Ebay who provided you with a pre-paid label.

As you chose not to use the label, the buyer will eventually be refunded the £2.94.

If you look again at the Ts & Cs on the refund application, it states:

To process your refund, we'll verify the following:

  • The label was paid for by you (you offered free shipping to the buyer).

In which case there is a flaw in the eBay system then, it let me add my own tracking reference; if I wasn't supposed to do that it shouldn't have been an option for me to choose; hence why I am requesting a refund of the money eBay has, why should I the buyer lose out on the £2.94 when their system let me do what I did ?

It is not a flaw.

Ebay collects the payment from the buyer and issues a prepaid label.  Simple Delivery is mandatory for private sellers - Ebay don't want you to choose a different option.

However, they cannot force you to use the label and you are still able to add your own tracking to the sale but, if you choose to independently purchase your own postage, you can't get the payment back.

If you don't intend using Simple Delivery but want to use your own postage option and reclaim from Ebay every time, you would have to list your items with free postage/seller pays.

All the information is available on the Simple Delivery pages - if you plan to continue selling on the site, maybe set aside a little time to have a read.

Fees and charges

Unless you've offered free postage, your buyer is charged for the delivery cost at checkout and the amount is then paid to eBay for the label. If you decide not to use the prepaid label, you'll need to purchase your own label instead at your own cost.

That is a flaw imho.

It's important to fully understand how Ebay's processes work before using them.  If you don't do that,  it's not a flaw when it doesn't work as you think it should.
