Per year allowance

As a private seller I am only allowed x amount per year, so can anyone tell me if the eBay year is 1st January or April as in the tax year?

There is no earning limit. Whether you have to pay tax or not would be down to the kind items you sell.

eBay will pass on data to HMRC automatically if you're selling 30 or more items a year OR have total earnings over the equivalent of £1,740 per calendar year.

The tax year runs from April 5th to April 6th.

The eBay reporting year runs Jan - Dec.

The reporting year is whole year from jan for 30 sales or €2000(approx £1700) 

The tax year is Apr-Apr
