Item returned and damaged, nothing happened

I sold a meta quest 2, the buyer returned it and said the controller was "cracked & non functional".

In reality, the "crack" was a minor scratch that I struggled to physically see with my own eyes.

Everything was tested beforehand, it was functional and still is functional. The item was listed as "used".

The problem I have is that they wrapped the box for the VR headset with some variant of tape that rips the box material when you go to take it off, they also (or ebay did, i dont know) stuck a big sticker to the side of it saying the item had a cracked controller. This most certainly takes value away from my item and now I will not be able to sell it for the price I had.

Ive looked for a while now but ebay seem to have drifted away from being useful to the people who actually sell on their platform, so I am asking now what would the appropriate causd of action be? I have already reported the damage about a week ago when I accepted the refund.

You refund. Failure to refund and buyer can escalate to ebay, who refund at your expense, but you get a defect.

Only after you have refunded is it then time to report buyer for abuse of the return system, It is unlikely to make any difference to the refund, but it gets on record, so buyer cannot make a practice of this sort of return.
