I bought an item that was new and it stopped working within a week. I messaged the seller straight away but got no response. Today I have requested a return but the seller has straight away closed the return and not allowed a refund or return. How can I escalate this further please?

A seller cannot close a case for item not as described, unless you claimed too late, or did not escalate on time and the case closed.
Or, did you open the wrong case? If one for a straight return, and the seller does not accept returns the case will close.
Once closed another cannot be opened with eBay. You can try your payment provider now, for help with your refund.

Thanks - no it wasn't claimed too late and it's the right (only) case. The seller closed it within minutes of me submitting it and so I want to know how I can escalate this. I paid on my credit card but feel it should be resolved within EBay.

As advised, sellers can't close cases unless you pick a 'change of mind' reason.
What was the item number?
What specific reason did you choose for wanting a return?
More information will mean better advice.
