HELP - have bought counterfeit goods but paid cash on collection and completely stuck now!

I recently bought some golf clubs (£520) from a local-ish Seller. The Seller was requesting electronic payment but I said I would prefer to pay cash on collection (stupid mistake that I now regret but can’t turn the clock back) because I have cash from previous items I have sold. I was worried about whether they were genuine because there are lots of counterfeit goods flooding the market at the moment and he said that his wife bought them for him and reassured me that he has a receipt that he can show me when I collect.

I collected them and he flashed me a copy of the receipt on his wife’s phone but I didn’t get a chance to study it in detail. I looked over the clubs briefly on the doorstep but it was poor lighting (again, another regret with the power of hindsight). When I got home I looked over them in detail and something didn’t seem right. I then did a ton of research and discovered that they are counterfeit clubs.

I now realise that, because I paid cash, I’m not covered by the eBay money back guarantee. I have contacted the Seller and they are still insisting they are real and are now saying that they have tried spending one of the £50 notes I gave but it was refused in a shop! I’ve asked to give the clubs back and get my money back and he is refusing, saying that he is “taking advice” and he is now asking for my name, address and bank details (I haven’t given this information).

I’ve asked several times for a copy of the receipt and/or the date of purchase but he won’t provide this. Unfortunately I can’t go to the shop his wife supposedly bought them from as it is branch of American Golf that has now closed down. I will try another branch in the hope that they can confirm that they are counterfeit but can’t check out the legitimacy of the original sale without more info from the Seller.

Even if I do get more info, for example proof that they are counterfeit or proof that they weren’t bought from where he said they were, I’m still stumped as to how I get this sorted?! Any advice welcome (other than to say I shouldn’t have paid cash, which I realise now!).

how I get this sorted?!

Not through eBay. As it was a cash sale they have no involvement.

For £520 it is worth considering your legal options, especially as the buyer is local.

See a solicitor.
