For letter sized post, do I have to buy purchase labels or can I drop off at a post box?

I sell Pokemon cards, with holos and reverse holos being singular listings, so 1 card per listing. I've been choosing Custom Delivery since it only costs 87p to post something so small.

I sold a card of £2 with an add fee deducted, and then paid for a label, which costs £2.69, meaning I lost money. I didn't realise it was me who pays for the label, I thought it was the buyer (I've only been selling since April 2025, so not very long).

With another card listing (a 32 card bundle), I didn't go into negatives, but it was mere pennies I made. So, for both listings, I've voided the labels to get my money back, thinking I can just write out the addresses on their enveloped, put on a 2nd class stamp, and drop inside a postbox.

But.... can I do this? Is that allowed? Does it need a proper ebay postage label on it, or can it go without? Letter sized sales aren't really packages after all, and that's what postboxes are for.

For now I've changed all my card listings to Simple Delivery so the buyer pays so it can cover the label cost, but then they end up paying over £3 for shipping AND a label, and if they're buying a card only worth like £1.15, it's obviously off putting to buyers if they're paying more than what the item's worth.

I could re-list my cheaper cards so instead of 1 card per listing, sell them as bundles, so postage and label cost would be the same if they were buying several holos/reverse holos instead of 1, but I originally thought 1 per listing would be better, because what if someone doesn't want a bundle? What if someone only wants 1 card, or doesn't want a certain card in a listing?

Please help, I'm confusing and stressing myself over this on what to do. 😞 Any help is greatly appreciated!

You do not need to use SD so long as under £10 and 100 gms.

It is up to you how you post, if you are happy to put in post box with 87p stamp then it is just at your risk. It does tell you on the listing form that ebay buyer protection does not apply if you do not use SD.

That is what I do and have not had a claim of not received for several years
