What is buyer protection fee ?

This was introduced in February 2025.

eBay introduced a compulsory Buyer Protection fee for items sold by private sellers to cover fraud detection, 24/7 customer support, and secure transactions.

The fee is included in the final price shown to the buyer.

To my mind it is charged to cover services that are rarely used or needed by buyers, while the money back guarantee is “free”. In other words it is a back door way of charging a fee.
