I returned an item that was free postage to me and I've been charged £3.35 to return it. Contacted the seller and they have said that eBay may have charged me to return it. Can anybody elaborate on this. Is this information correct or is it the seller who is required to fully refund me?

The buyer pays the return postage for a change of mind return.

'Free Postage' basically means the seller has incorporated it into the starting price, there was no free postage when they took it to the Post Office, they paid the stamp cost there.
If this was a straight return then yes, you will have to pay for that fuly tracked return postage to send the item back.
For item not as described, the case will enforce the seller to pay for that postage if they want their item back first.
